U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) has just announced she will not run for re-election to Congress, instead choosing to devote herself to her presidential campaign.
Gabbard becomes just the sixth Democrat this term to leave office or announce they will be leaving office at the end of their term. The late Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) was the fifth.
The Hawaii Democratic Congresswoman just days ago battled former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, who suggested she is being groomed by the Republicans to run as a third party candidate. Gabbard, replying to erroneous news reports based on reporting from The New York Times, blasted Clinton for suggesting she is a Russian asset.
But Gabbard also promised at the time she would only run as a Democrat and would not run for president as a third party candidate.
I’m fully committed to my offer to serve you, the people of Hawaii & America, as your President & Commander-in-Chief. So I will not be seeking reelection to Congress in 2020. I humbly ask for your support for my candidacy for President of the United States https://t.co/cNcjSNSoZl

Gabbard is currently polling in the low single digits, with an average of 1.3%.
Thursday night she appeared on Fox News’ “Hannity,” parroting GOP talking points, but did not make her announcement until later:

GOP Mass Exodus Continues: Prominent 14-Term Republican Congressman Calls It Quits
The GOP mass exodus just picked up another major figure. Prominent and powerful U.S. Rep. Peter King, Republican of New York, has announced his retirement after 14 terms. King, who was twice chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, says he will not seek re-election.
King is the 20th House Republican who will not seek re-election.
Congressman King is a frequent guest on all the major cable television shows. A strong supporter of President Trump, he included in his statement Monday, “I intend to vote against President Trump’s impeachment and will support the President’s bid for re-election.”
King serves the people of New York’s 2nd congressional district, which includes densely-populated section of Long Island. The district was strongly Democratic, voting for Barack Obama twice, and for John Kerry and Al Gore over George W. Bush. But in 2016 King’s constituents voted for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton, 53–44%.
GOP Mass Exodus Continues: Hard Core Conservative Republican Congressman to Retire
Longtime U.S. Congressman Greg Walden, Republican of Oregon, has just announced he will not seek re-election and will retire at the end of his term. Walden is the 21st Republican to have left or announced they will leave during the 116th Congress.
As nationwide support for the impeachment and removal of President Donald Trump grows, many Republicans appear to be realizing they likely will not win back the House in 2020 and do not want to conduct a re-election campaign.
In 2016 Walden was one of just seven House Republicans who actually changed their vote to defeat a measure to protect LGBTQ people, resulting in its defeat. The bill had actually passed but Republicans, under the leadership of Speaker Paul Ryan, left the clock open to allow members to change their votes.
Walden, a hard core conservative, is the Ranking Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. An 11-term lawmakers, he was first elected to Congress in 1998. He is 62 years old.
GOP Mass Exodus Continues: Powerful 13-Term Republican US Congressman Calling It Quits
The GOP mass exodus is expanding. A powerful 13-term Republican U.S. Congressman from Texas has just announced he too is retiring. Rep. Mac Thornberry becomes the 19th Republican to announce they are leaving the House this session, and the sixth House Republican from Texas to throw in the towel.
Rep. Thornberry, who serves as the Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, has been in Congress since 1995. He is just 62 years old, and has no re-election worries: Thornberry’s district is the most Republican in the country. He will leave the House at the end of his term.
Thornberry has a soldly anti-LGBTQ voting record. He has earned 100% ratings from anti-gay hate groups, including the American Family Association and Family Research Council.
