GOP MASS EXODUS: Republican Congressman in District Trump Won by Double-Digits ‘Retires’ to Run for County Seat

A four-term Republican U.S. Congressman who represents a district President Donald Trump won by double digits has just announced he is retiring at the end of his term. Rep. Paul Cook of California will run for a seat on the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, according to the L.A. Times and The Hill.

Republicans, who know they cannot win back the House next year, are leaving in droves.

Rep. Cook becomes the 18th Republican to announce they are leaving the U.S. House of Representatives this term. By comparison, only four Democrats have announced they are leaving.

Cook won re-election last November with 60% of the vote. His district is heavily pro-Trump. The district voted for the president over Hillary Clinton by nearly 16 points.

Cook leaves Congress with a thin but considerably anti-LGBT and anti-abortion record.

The GOP mass exodus is expanding. A powerful 13-term Republican U.S. Congressman from Texas has just announced he too is retiring. Rep. Mac Thornberry becomes the 19th Republican to announce they are leaving the House this session, and the sixth House Republican from Texas to throw in the towel.

Rep. Thornberry, who serves as the Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, has been in Congress since 1995. He is just 62 years old, and has no re-election worries: Thornberry’s district is the most Republican in the country. He will leave the House at the end of his term.

Thornberry has a soldly anti-LGBTQ voting record. He has earned 100% ratings from anti-gay hate groups, including the American Family Association and Family Research Council.

Giuliani Will ‘Absolutely’ Face Criminal Charges for Ukraine Meddling: Ex-SDNY Prosecutor

Appearing on MSNBC with host Alex Witt, a former SDNY prosecutor who served with Rudy Giuliani when he was a U.S. Attorney said there was no doubt in his mind that the former New York City mayor will face criminal charges over his dealings with officials in Ukraine.

Speaking with the host, attorney John Flannery noted that many of Giuliani’s former associates who served as prosecutors believe he has broken the law.

“It’s been a long time coming, the levels of disappointment with Rudy,” Flannery began. “When I first knew him, I thought he was the kind of fellow we would find on the Supreme Court in his Bobby Kennedy days before he went to Washington. Now I see a guy who should be arrested for impersonating a criminal defense attorney.”

Wit  later in the interview pressed the former prosecutor about Giuliani’s shenanigans in Ukraine, asking, “Do you think Rudy Giuliani is in legal jeopardy?”

“Absolutely, ” Flannery shot back without missing a beat. “We have a combination of bribery, we have the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act at risk here because we’re paying a favor, withholding funds and expecting a condition precedent that favors the president favorably before the funds are given, and we also have efforts to conceal the very document we had in this conversation by people in the White House.”

“We have the State Department involved, we have the Justice Department involved,” he continued. “This is a major scandal and hopefully by Halloween, we’ll figure out how to identify the articles of impeachment that correspond to this misconduct.”

GOP Mass Exodus: ‘Staggering’ Number of House Republicans Leaving – One Way or Another – Since Trump Became President

The ongoing GOP mass exodus is even larger than many may have realized. Nearly four out of every ten Republican Representatives who were in office the day Donald Trump was sworn in as president no longer are or have announced they no longer will be U.S. Congressmen or Congresswomen.

The Washington Post reports that in the almost three years since Trump took office, due to resignations, retirements, and election losses “nearly 40 percent of the 241 Republicans who were in office in January 2017 are gone or leaving.”

Calling the retirement numbers alone “particularly staggering,” the Post reports “41 House Republicans have left national politics or announced they won’t seek reelection” since Trump took office – and that does not include election losses.

16 of those 41 resignations and retirements are from this year alone. Two more resignations are to run for the Senate.

“That dwarfs the 25 Democrats who retired in the first four years of former president Barack Obama’s tenure — and Republicans privately predict this is only the beginning.”

Publicly many of these Republicans “cite family as the reason for leaving,” but privately they point to the direction Trump has taken the GOP, and their “pessimism” about retaking the House majority next year.
