Straight Pride Organizers Lose Parade Permit Battle – For Now

Published

on

The organizers of a “straight pride” parade with Christian white supremacist overtones have been denied a permit they were seeking to hold the event in Modesto, California, at least for now.

The city rejected the request from The National Straight Pride Coalition, which has just one chapter, after the organization lost its liability insurance, CBS Sacramento reports. Citing safety concerns, the city rejected an initial request to hold the parade in a park, determining it was not an appropriate use of the space.

“As of tonight I can confirm the City of Modesto will be denying the permit,” city spokesperson Thomas Reeves said.

But the National Straight Pride Coalition may be allowed to hold its Straight Pride parade on August 24 in a downtown plaza if it regains its liability insurance by Tuesday.

The founder of The National Straight Pride Coalition accidentally admitted his group is “racist” while speaking before the Modesto city council last week.

We’re a totally peaceful racist group,” Don Grundmann said. His comment was met with a roomful of laughter. He later claimed he misspoke.

But the parade appears on the group’s website, and is listed as one of its “War Activities.”

Co-founder Mylinda Mason has said the parade would be like a “church service” celebrating America, which she said was founded by “white Caucasians.”

The group’s website refers to “Caucasians” as “the biological majority of the historical developers and founders of Western Civilization.” It also calls Christianity “the religious form of the formation, development, and advancement of Western Civilization; i.e.; the engine of bringing prosperity and equality to all of humanity.”

Mason’s estranged adopted son, who is gay, opposes the parade, saying it is not “straight pride,” but “hate pride.”

Here’s a report from CBS Sacramento:

‘Straight Pride’ Marchers Overwhelmed by Mockery, Dancing Counter-Protesters and ‘Boston Hates You’ Chants

The Straight Pride Parade held in Boston on Saturday was greeted by counter-protesters — and a large degree of ridicule.

“In dueling demonstrations about a mile apart, a Straight Pride Parade with a few hundred marchers holding small American flags stepped off at noon from Copley Square as a vocal counterprotest continued to grow at City Hall Plaza, the destination of the controversial march,” the Boston Globe reported Saturday. “Hundreds of police, many with gas masks and helmets, stood watch or walked beside the parade toward Government Center, where protest organizers pumped up the crowd with chants such as ‘No justice, no peace, no racist police’ and ‘We’re here, we’re queer, we’re fabulous.’”

“The parade was organized by the group Super Happy Fun America, whose leaders have denied allegations of bigotry,” the newspaper noted. “Protesters, however, called the parade an affront to the LBGTQ community that is intended to stoke discrimination.”

“Parade organizer Mark Sahady is part of Resist Marxism, a group founded by an alt-right leader that has a history of violence. That group helped organize a ‘free speech’ rally in Boston in 2017 that critics said attracted white nationalists,” the Globe noted.

Here are some of the images from Boston:

Anti-LGBTQ ‘Straight Pride’ Organizers Again Fail to Meet Permit Deadline but Insist Event Will Still Take Place

Published

The City of Modesto, California gave the organizers of a “straight pride” parade until 5 PM Tuesday to obtain and submit proof of insurance required to hold their event. It was a second chance for The National Straight Pride Coalition to follow the rules, which they were unable to do once again. Last week their request for a permit was denied, on the grounds their chosen venue was inappropriate, and because they reportedly had lost their insurance.

But National Straight Pride Coalition founder Don Grundmann (photo) insists some sort of event will take place on August 24, CBS Sacramento reports (video below). Grundmann blames what he calls the slow wheels of bureaucracy for the delay.

The city is still expecting protests and counter-protests on August 24, and is bracing and preparing for the possibility of violence.

Grundmann’s group claims it is a “national” organization, yet has only one chapter. But it has been getting national attention for what some say are its homophobic, bigoted, Christian nationalist, racist, and even white supremacist views.

In a statement sent to NCRM, Equality California described the organization as “an extreme anti-LGBTQ and white supremacist group.”

Grundmann himself received nationwide attention after he told the Modesto city council, “We’re a totally peaceful racist group,” He later said he misspoke.

The group’s website offers proof that perhaps he did not.

The parade  is listed on the group’s website as one of its “War Activities.” And its manifesto refers to “Caucasians” as “the biological majority of the historical developers and founders of Western Civilization.” It also calls Christianity “the religious form of the formation, development, and advancement of Western Civilization; i.e.; the engine of bringing prosperity and equality to all of humanity.”

WATCH: Straight Pride Founder (Accidentally) Admits His Group Is ‘Racist’

The founder of a “straight pride” organization speaking before a California city council Wednesday night blasted one of the councilwomen for calling the group racist – then proceeded to say that the National Straight Pride Coalition is, in fact, “racist.” While it may have been a slip of the tongue, statements made by another of the group’s leaders and statements on the group’s website make clear the organization advocates white supremacy.

“I’m the founder and director of the National Straight Pride Coalition,” Don Grundmann told the Modesto City Council, as he attempted to argue for a parade permit. He was repeatedly booed by the audience, and interrupted his remarks to label them “racist clowns.”

Grundmann denounced a prayer vigil that he says was held to show opposition to his straight pride parade, More than 100 people attended the vigil.

“We’re a peaceful group we wanted to have a peaceful meeting,” he claimed, lamenting what he called a “one way street for tolerance in this nation.”

“We haven’t done anything,” Grundmann told Councilmember Kristi Ah You, as he accused her of “pulling the race card” against his group.

“We’re a totally peaceful racist group,” Grundmann then said. His comment was met with a roomful of laughter.

The Sacramento Bee, which posted the video (below), reports “he took that comment back, saying he had misspoke.”

In an interview with The Sacramento Bee, Grundmann said he is “trying to save children from the LGBTQ+ community, from being molested.” It was unclear what he was referring to.

After Grundmann’s remarks, the video shows comments by Matthew Mason, who happens to be the adopted but estranged son of Straight Pride organizer Mylinda Mason. He is also the birth son of Councilmember Ah You. He is also gay.

Mason says his adoptive mother told him he was no longer welcome in her house when he was 19 and came out as gay.

In an interview earlier this week Mylinda Mason said the parade would be like a “church service” celebrating America, which was founded by “white Caucasians.”

The group’s website refers to “Caucasians” as “the biological majority of the historical developers and founders of Western Civilization.”

It refers to “Heterosexuality” as “the natural biological foundation for human life, its continuance, and the ground upon which all civilization is built.”

It calls Christianity “the religious form of the formation, development, and advancement of Western Civilization; i.e.; the engine of bringing prosperity and equality to all of humanity.”

And it calls Nationalism “the patriotic love of their nation and its interests, principles, and future that motivated the Founder’s development of Western Civilization.”
