Karen Pence, wife of Vice President Mike Pence, spent time this week in North Carolina campaigning for Mark Harris, a right-wing pastor who upset incumbent Rep. Robert Pittinger in the GOP primary in May.
Karen Pence was seemingly brought in to help Harris deal with fallout from recent controversy over comments Harris had made about women, such as emphasizing Bible verses requiring women to submit to their husbands and questioning whether women having careers is “healthy” for society. WFAE reported that “Pence came to Charlotte as the guest of the Women for Mark Harris Bus Tour,” which kicked off at the University of North Carolina’s Charlotte campus on Monday morning.
“I’m here because this race is so important,” Pence said at the rally, emphasizing Harris’s support for President Trump’s agenda. “The road to the majority leads right through North Carolina. This seat, this race, it is critical to keeping the majority in Congress.”
Harris is a member of the Family Research Council’s “Watchmen on the Wall” network who wants to push his extreme opposition to abortion rights and LGBT equality into law. One of his “staunchest supporters,” according to the Christian Broadcasting Network, is Christian nationalist David Lane, who has made it a priority to recruit conservative evangelical pastors to run for office.
As we noted after his primary win:
Not surprisingly, Harris has a track record of opposing LGBTQ equality and abortion rights. Harris was an ally of the anti-LGBTQ Benham brothers in opposition to a Charlotte nondiscrimination law, and he was a driving force behind the campaign that put a ban on same-sex couples getting married into the state constitution; his First Baptist Church contributed more than $50,000 to the campaign. Harris, who says being gay is “a choice,” has said the anti-equality amendment was not about discrimination but about “standing up for the values and principles that have been a part of the fabric of American society.”
… He has praised new state-level restrictions on abortion and called for conservative Supreme Court justices who will revisit Roe v Wade so that the law can recognize that “life begins with conception” and extend legal protections to the “unborn.”
In August, Media Matters unearthed video of Harris bemoaning, “We have watched in one generation where homosexuality was once criminalized to now we see the criminalization of Christianity.”
Media Matters has also reported on Harris’s Islamophobia, including his signing of a statement that falsely claimed that “all terror groups … have 100% Muslim membership” and asserted that “terrorist entities are not aberrations of Islam, they are the very essence of it.”
“We need good men like Mark Harris in Congress to keep the country moving ahead,” said Pence.
Just before she spoke at the rally, Pence did a brief interview with anti-LGBTQ personality Elizabeth Johnston—aka Activist Mommy. Johnston asked if “the pro-life issue” was a motivating factor for Pence to campaign for Harris. “Absolutely,” said Pence, saying that she and her husband told their children the first time he ran for Congress the told their children, “We’re running to save the babies.”
Johnston followed up with her own declaration to the camera, saying, “I am here today because Mark Harris looked me in the eye, and he assured me that he wanted to see an end to the bloodshed, an end to the murder of babies through abortion, and he said, ‘No exceptions.’ And I said, ‘That is a man I can get behind.’
Among the other rally speakers was academic-turned-Religious Right activist Carol Swain, who said she believed Harris would fight for “the values and principles that made our nation great.” Swain said that Christians “have an obligation to Christ,” adding, “And I believe that God is doing a new thing in this nation, and that He’s raising up godly men and women to serve in office, men and women, and Mark has answered the call.”
“It is a God mission that we are on,” said Christian TV host Donica Hudson. “Mark Harris operates through the only worldview that I personally will ever vote for,” she declared, saying that worldview is based on love and unity, “the sanctity of human life,” and “the value of biblical traditional marriage,” and “parental rights.” She also praised Harris for being a “constitutionalist.”
Tami Fitzgerald of the North Carolina Values Coalition announced the group’s endorsement for Harris. “Mark Harris supports raising children in families with a mom and a dad,” she said, declaring that there are “no family values” in the Democratic Party platform.
Debbie Meadows, wife of Rep. Mark Meadows, chair of the right-wing Freedom Caucus, said Harris has a “spine of steel” and won’t be like one of the people who “fold like a cheap suit” when they get to Washington. Said Meadows, “Mark Harris will be the same man in Washington that he has been for decades here in the Charlotte area.”

Bonkers Fox News Segment Blames Mass Shootings on God-Hating Liberals Who Teach Kids About Evolution
Fox News calls anti-gay hate group head a “former police officer.”
Perkins appeared on Fox & Friends where he was identified as a “former police officer.”
According to Perkins, the shooting near Odessa, Texas that left seven dead was “just tragic.”
“At some point, we have to realize that we as a nation have a problem,” he continued. “And the problem is not the absence of laws, it’s an absence of morality.”
Perkins said he was “willing” to talk to liberals about ending the epidemic of mass shootings.
“I agree, praying alone is not enough,” Perkins opined. “It’s time to act. It’s not just about having a conversation about restricting those who should not have guns, criminals. But it’s also a discussion of a absence of a moral core in our culture today.”
Perkins said that teaching children about evolution is one cause of mass shootings.
“We’ve taught our kids they come about through chance through primordial slime and then we’re surprised they treat their fellow Americans like dirt!” he exclaimed. “It’s time we talk about the result of the left’s systematic march through our institutions, driving religious expression from the public square.”
Perkins complained that children are not being taught that they are “created in the image of God.”
“We’ve driving religion from our public life and we’re shocked that we no longer have morality and we no longer value human life,” he remarked.

Unrepentant, YouTube Reverses Course, Apologizes to Far-Right Channels and Unbans Them
YouTube has shown itself to be particularly susceptible to pressure campaigns organized by the far-right
YouTube has undone actions taken against two far-right YouTube accounts and one white nationalist YouTube account after banning those accounts earlier this week.
Right Wing Watch reported on Monday that YouTube had removed at least four YouTube channels that produced white nationalist and racist content from its platform, including channels used by The Right Stuff, American Identity Movement (formerly Identity Evropa), VDARE, and James Allsup. On Tuesday night, VDARE tweeted that its YouTube channel had been reinstated.
After banning the white nationalist publication VDARE from YouTube yesterday, YouTube appears to have reversed course.

— Jared Holt (@jaredlholt) August 28, 2019
Right Wing Watch asked YouTube for comment via email on its reinstatement of VDARE TV on Wednesday, but did not receive a response.
Yesterday, Boing Boing noted that YouTube reinstated two other far-right YouTube channels, “The Iconoclast” and a channel used by far-right activist Martin Sellner, and that YouTube told reporters it made the “wrong call” when it decided to remove those channels but failed to elaborate further. BuzzFeed reports:
YouTube’s reactivation of Sellner’s channel comes two months after the video platform joined with Facebook, Microsoft, and Twitter to make a commitment they called the “Christchurch Call to Action”. YouTube and the other tech companies said they were committed to “fight the hatred and extremism that lead to terrorist violence.”
The Iconoclast has more than 200,000 subscribers on YouTube. In an interview with Defend Europa last year, the YouTuber spoke extensively about the white nationalist conspiracy theory of “ethnic replacement.” He describes himself as a “British nationalist” who is “anti-mass migration.”
The decision comes a few days after YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki posted her quarterly letter to YouTube creators, which talked about how the company sometimes would leave up “controversial or even offensive” videos.
After Buzzfeed published its story, YouTube spokesperson Farshad Shadloo released a statement, claiming that although “many may find the viewpoints expressed in these channels deeply offensive,“ that YouTube had “determined the videos on their channels do not violate our Community Guidelines and so the channels were reinstated.”
Yesterday, Motherboard reported that YouTube had briefly reinstated and then re-banned the Infowars show “War Room” from its platform. Infowars was banned across nearly all tech platforms last year after we documented the numerous blatant violations of community guidelines committed regularly by Infowars personalities on social media platforms.
YouTube has shown itself to be particularly susceptible to pressure campaigns organized by the far-right. Last year, the site apologized and retracted strikes against far-right “philosopher” Stefan Molyneux’s YouTube account after he urged his fans to contact YouTube on his behalf.

Trump Has Become So Extreme He Now Thinks Fox News Is the Same as MSNBC and CNN – So He’s ‘Looking for a New News Outlet’
President Donald Trump has moved so far to the right he’s become an extremist. The former Democrat who became a Republican politician to run for president is now moving away from Fox News and has started supporting a far right wing media outlet that’s been called a “conspiracy theorist news network.”
Trump unleashed a rancid rant Wednesday morning, attacking his once beloved Fox News by lumping the right-wing cable network into the same batch as the (formerly) liberal MSNBC and (formerly) moderate CNN.
The president went berserk, slamming the number-one ranked cable news network and complaining it had aired an interview with DNC Communications Director Xochitl Hinojosa (whose name Trump did not use.) The interview wasn’t even about Trump, it was about the upcoming Democratic presidential debate, as Vox’s Aaron Rupar showed in these tweets that include video from the interview:
The interview that set Trump off is one in which DNC comms director @XochitlHinojosa went on Fox News to talk about the …… [checks notes] …. Democratic presidential debates. Trump apparently wanted host Sandra Smith to blindside her with Trump talking points. pic.twitter.com/RszlzY4Jgg
— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) August 28, 2019
Of course, Trump knows his base is shrinking and the only ones certain to vote for him are the far right wing extremists. Earlier Wednesday his tweets were based not on his watching Fox News, which he does religiously every morning during his growing “executive time,” but were based on his watching of a small, far right news station, OANN, One America News Network.
“The infestation of bedbugs at The New York Times office” @OANN was perhaps brought in by lightweight journalist Bret Stephens, a Conservative who does anything that his bosses at the paper tell him to do! He is now quitting Twitter after being called a “bedbug.” Tough guy!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 28, 2019
In fact, Trump has been praising OANN, which is even more to the right of Fox News, for months:
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 7, 2019
Trump has been attacking Fox News more frequently. Several times recently, he has blasted the network that literally helped put him in the White House when polls it released weren’t to Trump’s liking.
President Trump’s Approval Rating on Economy is at 52%, a 4 point jump. Fox Poll @foxandfriends Shouldn’t this be at 100%? Best stock market, economy and unemployment numbers ever! Most people working within U.S. ever! Low interest rates, very low inflation! Country doing great!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 25, 2019
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 25, 2019
Other good polls also in fifties, despite only Fake News, and then phony polls by A.P., CNN, NBC and, as always, Fox, who were WAY OFF on 2016 Election! https://t.co/DksmF8hTr7
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 24, 2019
.@FoxNews is at it again. So different from what they used to be during the 2016 Primaries, & before – Proud Warriors! Now new Fox Polls, which have always been terrible to me (they had me losing BIG to Crooked Hillary), have me down to Sleepy Joe. Even considering…..
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 26, 2019
It’s clear Trump wants a state TV network to do his bidding and support him unreservedly. It was a good run for Fox News. But Trump has a new favorite now, which reveals just how extreme he has become.
