Catholic League President Bill Donohue Is Really, Really Mad At Time Magazine
Catholic League President Bill Donohue is really, really mad at Time magazine and author Bill Saporito for a blog post Monday that compared Standard and Poor’s downgrade of the U.S. credit rating to the Catholic Church’s pedophilia priests problem.
Here’s the paragraph the really upset Donohue, a self-appointed one-man shop Catholic Church anti-defamation League:
“Having Standard & Poor’s downgrade the creditworthiness of the U.S., and warn the country about further downgrades, is a little like having the Catholic Church lecture Scout leaders on the proper behavior toward boys. The moral authority seems to be wanting. S&P, you may recall, is one of the ratings agencies (the others being Moody’s and Fitch) that greased the skids of the financial crisis by awarding AAA ratings to tranche after tranche of mortgage bonds called collaterized debt obligations, or CDOs. Recall that, unlike U.S. Treasuries, backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S., CDOs were underwritten by garbage mortgages — that is, backed by no-documentation ‘liar loans’ and other Alt-A subprime pond scum handed to borrowers who otherwise couldn’t get a nickel’s worth of credit at their local dry cleaner.”
Tell me, is there one false word in that paragraph? I think not.
Here’s what Donohue, a man who places an annual ad in The New York Times supporting pedophile priests, had to say about the Time post:
“This vicious, and wholly gratuitous, smear of the entire Catholic Church demands an apology. Vicious analogies citing other demographic groups—on this same subject—could have been made, but they would never have been published. Which means that persons other than Saporito should also issue an apology to Roman Catholics. We might expect this kind of cruel remark from some no-name angry blogger, but not from a high-ranking person at Time.”
Donohue is very, very familiar with attacks from bloggers, no-name or otherwise.
And Donohue over-reaches, typically. Saporito didn’t lambast Catholics, just their Church — something American Catholics have been doing for decades, and rightly so.
For those of you a bit unfamiliar with Donohue, who has  blamed The Gays for the Vatican’s priest pedophilia problem, wrote in this year’s ad defending pedophile priests, “Quite frankly, it is more acceptable in our society today to defend the rights of Gitmo detainees than Catholic priests.†Donohue, misunderstanding fact, and misunderstanding that Gitmo detainees are being detained, (and, if reports are/were true, tortured,) forgets to mention that priests, regardless of guilt or innocence, are allowed to walk the streets and continue with their lives as they please.
Donohue in the same diatribe had the gall to ask, “Why are priests being singled out when the sexual abuse of minors among other segments of the population is ongoing today?”
I’ll let you answer that one.
If that’s not enough for you, take a look at this video in which Donohue suggests Lady Gaga wants to get raped.
