Pam Bondi’s Response To Federal Judge: I Told You So
Attorney General Pam Bondi has responded to a federal judge, effectively saying “I told you so” after he struck down Florida’s same-sex marriage ban.
Pam Bondi must know she’s lost her battle to save Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage. The 49-year old Attorney General waited until late Monday night to respond to a federal judge’s request regarding an emergency motion from Florida’s county clerks.Â
The clerks, who have made clear they do not wish to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, requested from U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle clarification on whether or not his ruling this summer would force them to treat all couples equally.
At issue is a memo from attorneys for the Florida Court Clerks & Comptrollers, which claimed that the clerks not only did not have to issue licenses to same-sex couples, but would be in violation of the law when Judge Hinkle’s stay expires after January 5.
Plaintiffs responded to Judge Hinkle, stating that they fully believe all Florida clerks would be bound to issue licenses to same-sex couples.
But AG Bondi took another route. In a press release she blamed Judge Hinkle for the “widespread confusion that now exists, as evidenced by multiple media reports,” and claimed her fight to extend the judge’s stay, delaying marriage, “is precisely what the Attorney General’s Office sought to avoid.”Â
Not satisfied with an “I told you so,” Bondi went one disrespectful step further.
“As stated in the response filed today, if the federal court intended the injunction to have effects beyond those that appear on its face, the court may wish to provide appropriate clarification.”
