John Kelly Was Grilled by Mueller About Possible Trump Obstruction: Report

Investigators working with special counsel Robert Mueller have grilled White House chief of staff John Kelly as part of their investigation into whether President Donald Trump has been attempting to obstruct justice, according to a new report from CNN.
Sources tell CNN that “Kelly responded to a narrow set of questions from special counsel investigators after White House lawyers initially objected to Mueller’s request to do the interview earlier this summer.”
Although Kelly was not serving as Trump’s chief of staff during the time he fired former FBI Director James Comey, Mueller’s team nonetheless wanted him to answer some questions about what he remembered about key events surrounding the firing.
“The Mueller questions to Kelly centered on a narrow set of issues in the investigation of potential obstruction of justice, chiefly Kelly’s recollection of an episode that took place after new reporting emerged about how the President had tried to fire Mueller,” CNN reports. “The President was angry at then-White House counsel Don McGahn about what had been reported by The New York Times. McGahn had refused to publicly deny the reporting. The special counsel wanted to try to corroborate McGahn’s version of events.”

Multiple outlets also reported on Friday that Kelly was expected to step down as Trump’s chief of staff in the coming days after a tumultuous tenure in which he frequently clashed with the president and members of his family.
