Dame Julie Andrews ‘Deeply Disturbed’ That U.S. Leaving Paris Climate Agreement
“No One Place or Person Comes ‘First’†Â
Beloved actress, singer, author and director Dame Julie Andrews has spoken out against Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the historic Paris Agreement to battle climate change.
“I try to focus on humanitarian issues more than political ones,†Andrews lamented on her Facebook page yesterday, “but I am deeply disturbed by the decision to withdraw America from the Paris Climate Agreement.â€
Andrews, known not just for her starring roles in “Mary Poppins†(for which she won an Academy Award for the titular role) and “The Sound of Music,†but also for her activism for the LGBT community and the arts, said that she “[stands] with the growing number of artists, scientists, educators and business leaders who recognize that no one place or person comes ‘first.’â€Â
“We’ve been given stewardship of this magnificent planet,†she concluded. “Shouldn’t we all share the responsibility for its protection and preservation?†Â
The beloved actress recently discussed her new Netflix series “Julie’s Greenroom†with The Advocate. The show, created with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton, seeks to “impart an appreciation of the arts to children.â€
The show, produced in conjunction with the Jim Henson Company, features a “crew of plush kids†created by the company’s “Creature Shop†that includes a character named Riley, who is gender non-binary, a historic first for LGBT inclusion.
