GLAAD: Kirk Cameron Is NOM’s Latest ‘Non-Cognitive Elite’
GLAAD has responded to the National Organization For Marriage‘s latest video starring Christian Evangelist Kirk Cameron, who pushes his theocratic traditional marriage views and merchandise, by calling Cameron NOM’s latest “non-cognitive elite.”

Stating “marriage needs to be strong,†in the video he recorded for NOM, Cameron says, “God makes it clear that society and civilization is really held together by the glue of family. So this is where the next generation of human beings are incubated and nurtured and matured in homes in families,†obviously forgetting the fact that gay people make and have families too.
In response to his comments in the video, produced for NOM’s Marriage Anti-Defamation Alliance — headed by NOM co-founder Maggie Gallagher herself, GLAAD President Herndon Graddick released this statement:
“Kirk Cameron and the anti-gay activists at NOM are making a claim that Americans know to be false. This rhetoric won’t work anymore. Communities across this country love and cherish their LGBT neighbors, friends and family members. This includes people in families headed by LGBT people. Their implication that LGBT couples can’t create loving and stable homes is not only outdated and irrelevant; it’s designed specifically to hurt those families.â€
And Aaron McQuade, Director of News and Field Media at GLAAD, writes:
Hey, remember a few months ago, when the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) got caught in court documents blatantly trying to create resentment between the LGBT community and other minority groups? Remember how nestled in those court documents, among all their underhanded race-baiting tactics, was the revelation that they were also seeking out “non-cognitive elites” to be celebrity spokespeople for their anti-LGBT cause?
Well they finally got one.
Cameron is right to consider family to be important, but he’s dead wrong to place that importance on only one kind of family.
So sorry to be the bearer of bad news to all you other non-cognitive types who had applied for the “celebrity anti-gay spokesperson” job, but it looks like the position is being filled by former Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron. (Better luck next time, I guess.)
As The New Civil Rights Movement reported yesterday, Cameron is using anti-gay marriage organizations like the Family Research Council, the American Family Association, and now, NOM’s Marriage Anti-Defamation Alliance, to promote his money-making pro-traditional marriage “charitable†enterprises.
