Do It Now: Hate Crimes Bill This Week!
**UPDATE: VOTE SCHEDULED THURSDAY NIGHT**
The Senate, eleven weeks after the House of Representatives approved it, may very well vote on the Hate Crimes Bill this week. You remember the Hate Crimes Bill, right? The one that Rep. Virginia Foxx used as an opportunity to demean and violate the memory of Matthew Shepard. The one that might have been able to, if not deter, at least to prosecute all the gay bashings we’ve seen recently. It’s time to take action. Demand protection now!
HRC has an easy way for you to contact your Senator. Do it now.
You can also use The Task Force’s texting & phone options: Do it now.
Or, you can text “EndHate” to 69866 or dial 202.684.2468. Do It NOW.
Remember, if anyone asks you about why we need hate crimes legislation, here are two answers for you to give them. The first, from Conservative columnist Kathleen Parker. She says a hate crime, “is really two crimes — one against the individual and another against the group to which he belongs. By that definition, [Matthew] Shepard’s murder may be viewed as a terrorist act against all gays, who would have felt more fearful as a result.â€
The second is this photo from “One Gay Soldier Murdered. Eight Gay Bashings. No Hate Crimes Bill Passed.”
