  • Dan Savage: Parents Of Trans Teen Leelah Alcorn 'Threw Her In Front Of That Truck'

Dan Savage has extremely strong words for the parents and therapists of Leelah Alcorn, the trans teen who died by suicide after leaving a note on Tumblr.

The suicide of Leelah Alcorn this week actually made headlines – something, sadly, that the mainstream news media too frequently ignores. Alcorn is the transgender teen who committed suicide by walking in front of a truck early Sunday morning. On her Tumblr page, she had scheduled a suicide note to post, which it did when she was no longer alive to unschedule – or postpone – it.

Alcorn also scheduled an apology post, which was published sometime after her suicide note. It was an apology to some, but not to her parents, who apparently had caused her great misery.

"Mom and Dad: Fuck you. You can’t just control other people like that. That’s messed up," were her final words to her parents in the apology note.

Dan Savage on Twitter went on a bit of a rant, posting tweets saying Leelah's parents should be prosecuted for her death.

    He explains why:

And he wants the therapists who tried to "counsel" her with religion to be prosecuted too.

But that's not the extent of his warning.

Even in death, Leelah Alcorn's parents refused to acknowledge their daughter, her mother posting this to Facebook before making the post private:

"My sweet 16 year old son, Joshua Ryan Alcorn went home to heaven this morning. He was out for an early morning walk and was hit by a truck. Thank you for the messages and kindness and concern you have sent our way. Please continue to keep us in your prayers."

Among Leelah's last words were these:

"My death needs to be counted in the number of transgender people who commit suicide this year. I want someone to look at that number and say 'that’s fucked up' and fix it. Fix society. Please."

As Savage says, no one should ever commit suicide to try to "take revenge on hateful parents." Nor should anyone commit suicide to try to make a point or to make a difference. There are other ways. Better ways.

That said, Leelah Alcorn's final words are being heard. It's tragic they weren't when, and by whom, they needed to be the most.

      Society: ‘Be yourself.’
      Society: ‘No, not like that.’

Completely agree with Dan on this.

I believe her parents just took down her tumblr. But they don’t know how the internet works. People have screenshot those truths from Leelah. Carla Wood Alcorn cannot erase Leelah’s truth. No matter what she does.

Her parents, her ‘therapists’ and her ‘doctor’ killed her. She may have made the final choice but they were abusing her to the point where she felt she had no choice.

IF you feel the same, there is help. Lambert House, The Trevor Project, The Wanda Alston House. There IS a place you can feel safe, and home. Family is not defined by genetics, but by love. Her ‘parents’ were not family. They did not deserve her as a daughter, and they never had a son.

I am a real live trans adult. There was a time when I though there was no way out, too. But because I was confronted with love, I am still here to tell my story. Below is the l link to my blog and link to the audio recording of my coming out story. Please share these with someone you know who is struggling and/or with someone who just doesn’t quite get it.

If what I read earlier is true, that her therapists had prescribed 60mg of Prozac/day for this child (the recommended dosage for teens is 20mg) then someone needs to lose their license.

That also goes for injecting religious dogma into the therapy sessions in a blatant effort to shame this poor child into compliance with her parents world view.. Whoever did that, coupled with the increased risk from taking too much medication, helped push her in front of that truck.

Her destruction was assured. Once her parents took her to therapy to fix nothing wrong with her, she never stood a chance.

Agree entirely with Dan here. The way that Leelah was, and still is, being treated is nothing short of emotional abuse. Mr. Savage also raises the incredibly important point that there are other children living with these abusers. The parents definitely need some action taken against them, there should be no question about it.

      @docker *she

When talking about transgendered people it is more proper and respectful to refer to them as the gender they identify rather than their birth gender.

I agree with Dan Savage. Prosecute the parents and the therapists for murder, child endangerment and child neglect, and remove their other children from their home to get them as far as possible away from the garbage religious message they shovel out layered with hate and loathing. It is time to stand up for the daughter Carla Wood Alcorn threw in front of the truck by her words even if not by her actions. Expose the evil of these two parents.

      The language may be strong,
but it is right on target.

Choosing to see their beautiful son as a biblical pawn rather than as a child, they condemned him to a shame-saturated isolation that none should suffer.

Let those JeeeZusss-besotted parents live out their lives in a hellish shame, and an Eternity in Hell itself.

They threw him in front of that truck.

      Praise JeeeZusss.
