School District Threatens Parents Their Children May Be Put in Foster Care Over Unpaid Lunch Bills

Published

on

A Luzerne County, Pennsylvania school district is under fire for sending letters to parents who owe money for their children’s lunches. The letters threaten that if the bills remain unpaid their children could be removed from their homes and placed in foster care.

“Your child has been sent to school every day without money and without breakfast and/or lunch. This is a failure to provide your child with proper nutrition and you can be sent to Dependency Court for neglecting your child’s right to food,” the letter reads, as NBC News reported.

“If you are taken to dependency court, the result may be your child being removed from your home and placed in foster care,” the letter (below) adds.

The school district solicitor, Charles Coslett, appeared gleeful over the letter, saying, “Hopefully that gets their attention, certainly did, think about it,” he told NBC News.

PAhomepage reports many are upset over the letter, and not just parents.

“It’s just not true. We do not remove children from families for unpaid bills,” Luzerne County Children and Youth Services executive director Joanne Van Saun told the newspaper. “I found it very disturbing. Upsetting. It’s a total misrepresentation, a gross misrepresentation of what our agency does.”

Luzerne County Manager David Pedri called it “a gross misrepresentation as to what we do. What you are really doing is weaponizing the good things we are doing in Luzerne County. I’m asking the school district to retract the letter.”

The school district is facing $20,000 in unpaid school lunch bills.

DeVos-Linked Christian Adoption Agency Exposed Dozens of Children’s Highly Sensitive Medical Data Online: Report

Published

on

A Christian adoption agency linked to Trump Education Secretary Betsy DeVos that also has a disturbing history of anti-LGBTQ bias is once again under fire, this time over a report that it left exposed online the “highly sensitive” medical data from 40 of its potential child adoptees.

In addition to names and dates of birth, Bethany Christian Services allegedly left information ranging from HIV status to lab test results to “intellectual development” to number of teeth in “PDFs openly available on its website. Some PDFs were called ‘Children Medical Examination Records,'” VICE News reports.

The charity has multiple connections to the DeVos family: Brian DeVos, a cousin of Betsy DeVos’ husband, was a senior vice president at the organization; Maria DeVos has served on Bethany’s board; and the DeVos family foundations donated more than $6 million to the charity between 1998 and 2016, according to NPR.

Bethany Christian Services is a faith-based foster care and adoption contractor that says it works in 30 states across the country. The State of Michigan last year sued the organization after learning Bethany refused to work with LGBTQ people and same-sex parents. In April the organization, saying it was “disappointed,” agreed to reverse its policy for Michigan, and reportedly will place children in homes headed by LGBTQ people.

Last month Rewire News reported Bethany is one of two organizations that are now “receiving federal teen pregnancy prevention funding” that “promote medication abortion reversal, which the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists considers ‘unproven and unethical.'”

Bethany has benefited from the Trump administration’s family and child migrant “zero tolerance” separation policy. It has been awarded contracts to foster children – reportedly at the rate of $200 to $700 per night per child.

“Pretty sure Larry Kudlow is drunk on my TV right now… And he is lying while slurring his words,” one Twitter user noted.

“Kudlow is on fox news Sunday right now and from my 30 yrs of tending bar, I gotta say this guy appears drunk,” another user observed.

Some hinted at Kudlow’s addiction to cocaine in the 1990s.

Julián Castro Blasts Twitter CEO for Not ‘Working to Remove White Supremacists’ After Steve King’s Bizarro Rant

Published

on

Democratic presidential candidate Julián Castro blasted Twitter for allowing white supremacists on its platform, and went after Republican Rep. Steve King, after the Iowa Congressman posted a bizarro rant directed at the Texas Democrat.

“Hey @JulianCastro,” Rep. King tweeted late Thursday night. “You think it’s NOT embarrassing when you declare that men can get pregnant and then you promote federal funding to abort men’s babies? Genius! A Democrat proposal that will have a CBO score of ZERO! And a bizarre score of 100!!”

Castro on Wednesday had scorched King after the nine-term Republican lawmaker drew scorn and outrage for saying humankind might not exist without rape and incest.

In response to King’s transphobic and bizarre attack, which seemed to come out of nowhere, Castro pivoted, apparently trying to get Twitter’s CEO, billionaire Jack Dorsey, to ban King from Twitter. Twitter has been under fire for what many feel is its slow response in removing white supremacists and neo-Nazis from its platform.

Congressman King has a long and growing history of racist, white supremacist, white nationalist, homophobic, transphobic, and anti-immigrant remarks and policies.
