Trump Caves on SOTU in Desperate Late Night Tweets

Donald Trump speaking in Mesa, Arizona

President Donald Trump late Wednesday night announced he will deliver the State of the Union address after the federal government is re-opened.

It is a stunning turn of events. The President of the United States has been playing “chicken” with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, first by telling her that he would own the shutdown, then reneging, trying to blame her and the Democrats.

On Wednesday, the politics got heated, in dueling – and very public – letters.

Trump told Speaker Pelosi he would deliver the State of the Union address in the House of Representatives. The Speaker responded almost instantaneously, telling the President she would not allow it until the shutdown ends.

At 11:12 PM ET President Trump acquiesced, tweeting, “I will do the Address when the Shutdown is over.”

Minutes later, he admitted he wanted the “history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber.”

Clearly, Speaker Pelosi has won this round.

Now, perhaps the President and the Senate Majority Leader can re-open the federal government?

A NEW FORM OF RESISTANCE

Robert Mueller Will Testify Before Two House Committees

The Democrats may be inching closer toward impeachment of Donald Trump if this latest move has anything to show for itself. Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller was subpoenaed to testify before two House committees – and has accepted.

Mueller had previously said he would not testify post-investigation findings because his 448-page written report “should speak for itself.” However, he’s since changed his tune.

“Americans have demanded to hear directly from the Special Counsel so they can understand what he and his team examined, uncovered, and determined about Russia’s attack on our democracy, the Trump campaign’s acceptance and use of that help, and President Trump and his associates’ obstruction of the investigation into that attack,” House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler and House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff said in a joint statement.

“He was and is deeply reluctant to come testify, but nonetheless he has agreed to respect the subpoena,” Schiff told CNN on Tuesday evening.

“This will be an opportunity to amplify the message of the report, and then, you know, we’ll let the chips fall where they may,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Democrat on the Judiciary Committee who has pushed for opening an impeachment inquiry.

Mueller will appear to potentially discuss his investigation’s findings before Congress on July 17 in back-to-back hearings with the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees. Mueller is expected to provide additional knowledge about the Trump-Russia election interference and 10 counts of possible obstruction of justice by the sitting president of the United States.

Trump’s response? A tweet.
