A petition on the White House’s site asking for a nationwide ban on all conversion therapy has just days left to qualify for a response. You can help by signing!
When transgender teen Leelah Alcorn died by suicide in December, she asked that her death not be in vain. While no one should ever use physical harm or suicide to make a point – there’s always a better way – the world was moved. Now activists are trying to get a nationwide ban on harmful, dangerous, and ineffective “conversion” or “reparative” therapy, so no one else endures the emotional abuse she did.
There’s a petition on the White House website, “Enact Leelah’s Law to Ban All LGBTQ+ Conversion Therapy.” If the petition receives 100,000 signatures within the first 30 days, the White House will respond. Right now, the petition has 67,259 signatures, and needs 32,741 more to qualify by February 2. While it won’t guarantee a bill or a law, greater awareness means greater possibility for action.
You can help bring attention to this important effort by signing the petition and asking your friends, co-workers, family, and social media fans and followers to do the same.
There’s also a similar petition at Change.org, although that is not time-limited. It has, however, received over 330,000 signatures, making it one of if not the fastest growing petition at the popular site.
