Gay Marriage Vetoing Chris Christie Will Deliver GOP Convention Keynote Address
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has been chosen to deliver the keynote address at the RNC Convention later this month. Christie is known as a loud mouth attack dog who takes no prisoners.
Via The Washington Post:
“As governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie has proven how bold Republican leadership gets results. He has fearlessly tackled his state’s most difficult challenges, while looking out for hardworking taxpayers,†said Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, in a statement announcing the governor’s selection. A GOP official familiar with convention planning confirmed that Rubio would introduce Romney.
…
The selection of the two Republicans to speak at the convention is consistent with GOP convention planners’ strategies to feature a diverse selection of pols, including many from outside Washington. Christie is one of ten current or former governors who has already been tapped to speak at the convention. Rubio, whose father is Cuban, joins Senate nominee Ted Cruz of Texas, New Mexico Gov.Susana Martinez and Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuno on the list of prominent Hispanic Republicans who are scheduled to speak at the gathering.
The New York Times noted:
Mr. Christie, who briefly considered running for president himself last year, will deliver one of the most closely watched speeches of the week. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, a Republican rising star who had been considered as a vice-presidential nominee for Mitt Romney, will introduce Mr. Romney at the convention, officials said.
Tapping the duo for two of the most high-profile moments of the convention will showcase a couple of the party’s most popular leaders in the hope of appealing to independent and Latino voters.
A former prosecutor, Mr. Christie has become a political sensation by discarding the usual pleasantries in favor of a brash and sometimes abrasive approach to governing. At town hall meetings in his state, he often argues with his constituents. When he thinks someone is stupid, he calls them stupid.
Earlier this year, Christie drew much negative publicity when he vetoed a same-sex marriage bill, and, adding insult to injury, said that voters should vote on marriage equality, and African-American civil rights should also have been voted upon.
