Support for Same-Sex Marriage Hits All-Time High
Majority of Republicans Still Do Not Support Equality
Gallup reports support for same-sex marriage has hit an all-time high. In 1996, when the conservative polling company first began asking Americans how they felt about same-sex couples marrying, a mere 27 percent said they were in favor. Now, 21 years later, support for marriage equality stands at 64 percent.
Despite the meteoric rise in support nationwide, Gallup notes that less than half Republicans, just 47 percent, support same-sex marriage.
Nearly three out of four Democrats support marriage equality, but surprisingly, that represents a five-point drop, to 74 percent, since last year. Drops in support, as the chart shows, are not uncommon, and the number may represent changing membership among all political parties, with many Americans increasingly self-identifying as independents.
