‘Truth Is a Real Thing’: Jim Comey Accuses Trump of Doing More to Undermine Faith in US Than Russia Is
Former FBI Director James Comey suggested on Thursday that President Donald Trump is doing more to undermine the United States than Russia is doing.
While speaking at the Hewlett Foundation’s Verify Conference, Comey was asked about the impact of Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.
“The truth is a real thing,” he noted.
Commenting on the erosion of truth in the U.S., Comey said: “My mind doesn’t even go to Russia first, it goes to the president of the United States.”
The former FBI director also said that he had “absolutely no idea” what Attorney General William Barr was talking about when he accused the FBI of “spying” on the Trump 2016 campaign.

.@Comey on Trump and Russian interference: “We need to ask why our president will not acknowledge what his intelligence community has found…I don’t think we are adequately prepared, and in many ways we’re inviting it to happen again in virtue of our president’s silence.”

Comey at #HewlettVerify: “The truth is a real thing.” Russia had three goals in 2016: Damage our democracy, harm Hillary Clinton, help elect Donald Trump. “The Russia thing is not a hoax. … They are going to come again because they exceeded their wildest hopes.”

.@Comey says he laughs when he wakes up and sees tweets from the president saying he should be in jail. But warns against the numbness that comes with Trump’s constant attacks on democratic institutions–constitutes “an erosion of those norms at the center of American life.”

.@Comey says when he thinks about erosion of truth “my mind doesn’t even go to Russia first, it goes to the president of the United States.” Adds that “there’s a tremendous amount of danger in our numbness …“ to Trump’s attacks on law enforcement. #hewlettverify

Asked about Russian disinfo eroding trust, Comey states that Trump is doing more through his rhetoric to undermine faith in US institutions (than Russia is). But I’d advocate thinking of Trump’s rhetoric as a 2nd order effect, shaped by Russian disinfo. #hewlettverify
