Trump Defunding HIV/AIDS, Cancer, Mental Health Programs – Using Money to Pay for Migrant Kids in Cages

Trump Administration Currently Housing 12,800 Migrant Children
Hundreds of millions of dollars of vital federal government agency funding for HIV/AIDS programs, cancer research, early childhood education, mental health, maternal health, women’s shelters, and substance abuse is being taken and used to support the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to put and keep migrant children in cages and desert internment camps.
Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar plans to “reallocate up to $266 million” over the next ten days, according to a letter sent to Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Yahoo News reveals in an exclusive report.
Head Start, an early childhood HHS program which helps young children in low-income households with education and food, and helps stabilize families, will lose $16.7 million.
The Ryan White HIV/AIDS program, which is the largest federally funded program for people living with HIV/AIDS will lose $5.7 million.
The National Cancer Institute, which researches cures for cancer and also provides funding for cancer research, will lose $13.3 million.
The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) will lose the largest single amount: $80 million.
The New York Times reports the Trump administration is currently housing 12,800 migrant children.
Trump’s tent city, an outdoor desert concentration camp, will be expanded to house 3800 children, at a cost to taxpayers of $750 per night per child.
HHS Secretary Alex Azar says he “is preparing for the trend of high capacity to continue.”
