Senate Democrat Plans Bill Blocking Trump’s “Dangerous, Hateful” Immigration Order
Here’s How To Contact Your Senators Or Join A Protest
The law is clear. The #MuslimBan is illegal. I will introduce a bill this week to immediately overturn this dangerous, hateful order.

Democrats in the Senate are planning legislation that would block President Donald Trump’s executive order banning entry for people from seven Muslim-majority countries.Â
Sen. Christopher Murphy, D-Conn., a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told The Washington Post his bill will likely rely on the 1995Â Immigration and Nationality Act, which bans discrimination against immigrants based on national origin.Â
“I think ultimately this ban will be struck down by the courts, but we need to put legislation on the table that Republicans could support, that overturns the ban,†Murphy said, calling the executive order “incredibly dangerous.”Â

Both Murphy and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Senate Democrats should use confirmation proceedings for Trump’s cabinet nominees to force debate on the executive order. Schumer choked up when discussing Trump’s immigration ban during his regular Sunday news conference.Â
“These orders go against what America has always been about. The orders make us less humanitarian, less safe, less American,†he said. “We’re demanding the president reverse these executive orders that go against what we are, everything we have always stood for.”Â
As of Sunday morning, only a handful of congressional Republicans had spoken out against the executive order, Fortune magazine reports. And both Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan have indicated they support it.Â
“If we get a few more Republicans I think we might be able to get legislation to overturn it. It’ll be up to getting more Republicans,†Schumer said, according to the Post.Â
