Could Same-Sex Marriage Be Overturned Under Donald Trump’s Presidency?
The Far Right Has Their Focus on Our Marriages, and Won’t Stop – Ever
Despite lying about being the most pro-LGBT candidate ever, Donald Trump will put into motion forces that will be able to weaken, and then ultimately overturn the Supreme Court’s historic Obergefell ruling that found the Constitution provides the right of marriage to same-sex couples. So says longtime LGBT rights journalist and activist Matt Baume, in his weekly YouTube video, “How Republicans Could Repeal Marriage Equality in 3 Easy Steps.”
How?
Even if Trump were supportive of LGBT civil rights (he’s not) almost if not every single person he has nominated or appointed isn’t. Bigly.
As Baume points out, Trump will place on the U.S. Supreme Court justices who will have little trouble overturning Obergefell. And before that, his attorney General nominee, Sen. Jeff Sessions will be happy to ask the Court to do so. He’ll also be supportive of court cases that will push the court into examining Obergefell.
And there’s more.
Baume notes conservatives across the nation are working to weaken marriage, especially for same-sex couples, passing laws that rob married same-sex couples of the rights married different-sex couples have by default. Like having both parents’ names on their children’s birth certificates, regardless if they are their biological children.
In short, while some advocates say LGBT people shouldn’t worry about marriage, as we’ve learned, the far right has their focus on our marriages, and won’t stop – ever.
