‘Mr. Scott’s Hands Were by His Side and He Was Slowly Walking Backwards’
The family of Keith Lamont Scott, including his wife, have now watched two videos of police shooting him, and are calling to have the videos released to the general public. Scott, who was 43 and the father of seven, was shot to death by police Tuesday afternoon. Police maintain he had a gun, which they say they have, while Scott’s family insists he was reading a book and did not have a gun.
Scott exited his vehicle in a “very calm, nonaggressive manner,” a statement released by the family’s attorney states.Â
“It is impossible to discern what, if anything, Mr. Scott is holding in his hands.”
“When he was shot and killed, Mr. Scott’s hands were by his side and he was slowly walking backwards,” the statement adds.
The ACLU has a petition calling on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to release the body or dash cam footage.
