Watch: Ricky Gervais Jokes About America’s ‘Future President Donald Trump’
At the Golden Globe Awards, Ricky Gervais made a painfully, possibly true joke – one of the few political statements of the evening.
Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards was a mixed bag. Despite your thoughts about Mr. Robot beating out Games of Thrones for Best TV Series — Drama, it was an event marred by too much profanity censorship, and too few political statements.
(Hey, I’m a huge Mr. Robot fan, but unless the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was making a statement that U.S. TV needs to be more cutting-edge-slash-socially-conscious…)
But host Ricky Gervais managed to get a few good ones in, including the one in this quick video:
“Eva Longoria and America Ferrera aren’t just beautiful, talented actresses,†Gervais told the audience, introducing the two stars. “They’re also two people who your future president, Donald Trump, can’t wait to deport.â€
While it’s impossible either actress could be deported – both are U.S. citizens – Gervais made a stunningly biting joke that should scare many for its braveness and truth.
When Longoria and Ferrera came onstage, they expanded the “joke,” referring to a mistake the HFP made last year.
“Hi, I’m Eva Longoria, not Eva Mendes.”
“And hi, I’m America Ferrera, not Gina Rodriguez.”
“And neither one of us are Rosario Dawson,†Longoria added.
“Well said, Selma,†Ferrera continued.
“Thank you, Charo,†Longoria quipped.
Last summer, as Addicting Info noted, in a Huffington Post op-ed Ferrera said Trump is “living in an outdated fantasy of a bigoted America.”
She observed that recently, “America celebrated some amazing milestones — marriage equality, universal healthcare, removing of the confederate flag — making it clear in which direction the country is moving.”
“That is why racist remarks that play to extremists won’t change the tide, no matter how hard you try. They will only serve to rally more Latino voters to the polls. Your negativity and your poorly thought out speech ignited a fire in our community. Thank you, Mr. Trump!”
