GOP Congressman Admits He Opposes Immigration ‘Because It Changes The Voter Pool’
Rep. Mo Brooks is a staunch anti-immigration activist, even opposing legal immigration.
Republican U.S. Congressman Mo Brooks of Alabama took to the House floor to read aloud a letter he wrote last week to Rep. Paul Ryan explaining why he will vote for him for Speaker. Brooks says Paul Ryan agreed to never allow an immigration bill to be brought to the floor for a vote as long as Barack Obama is president. (Brooks yesterday announced he will not vote for Ryan.)
One might label Brooks’ actions being an informed voter, or one might label them a very public attempt to strong-arm a lawmaker in a policy-for-votes trade.
As stunning as that exchange was – Brooks says Rep. Ryan agreed to his demands – that may not be the least egregious aspect of Brooks’ recent actions.
In an interview with Talking Points Memo this week, Brooks explained why he is anti-immigration.
“Immigration is far and away the most important problem facing America because it changes the voter pool, thereby controlling the outcome of every single public policy challenge America faces,” Brooks said.
“Changing the voter pool” means changing the ratio of Democrats to Republicans, and thus, increasing or decreasing a party’s chances of remaining in power – and a congressman’s chances of keeping his job – “thereby controlling the outcome of every single public policy challenge.”
In other words, Republican blather about supporting “strong borders” really means supporting the firewall their gerrymandering has given them to control the House, and the political process.Â
“Brooks’s comments,” Jon Green at Americablog observes, “confirm what has been thus far understood but unsaid in the debate over immigration reform: It has nothing to do with the relative security of our borders and everything to do with preventing millions of Latino immigrants from taking part in the political process.”
Just how anti-immigrant is Rep. Brooks?
In 2011 Brooks explained his “intensity” on “the illegal alien issue.”
“They have no right to be here. They are clogging up our emergency rooms, and making our education system more expensive. If you go to the Madison County Jail, there are far too many illegal aliens there because they have victimized Americans,†Brooks said.
“As your congressman on the house floor, I will do anything short of shooting them. Anything that is lawful, it needs to be done because illegal aliens need to quit taking jobs from American citizens,†the Alabama Congressman concluded.
At least he drew a line at shooting.
Last year, Rep. Brooks accused Democrats of waging a “war on whites.”Â
