Breaking: Wedding Bells Soon After Federal Appeals Court Denies Stay In Florida Marriage Case?
The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals has just denied a stay request to the State of Florida in two marriage cases. What’s next?
After U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle struck down Florida‘s ban on same-sex marriage in August, stayed his ruling until January, and subsequently refused to lift the stay, the 11th Circuit has weighed in. Florida asked the Court of Appeals to extend the stay past January 5. Moments ago, the Court refused.
As it stands now, same-sex couples in Florida will be able to marry beginning Tuesday, January 6, unless the U.S. Supreme Court weighs in before that date.
The full ruling can be read here.
If #SCOTUS does not grant a stay extension, the stay in #Florida #marriage ruling expires on January 5, end of day! #lgbt
