‘God Is Expanding Our Borders’: Duggars Say Petition Urging TLC To Cancel Show Only Helped

The Duggars are fighting back, and claiming victory. “They won’t succeed. Our show is the number one show on TLC.”

Jim Bob Duggar is taking particular delight in a petition asking TLC to cancel his family’s show, “19 Kids and Counting,” saying it has only helped his family expand their reach. “We’ve gained 50,000 Facebook fans last week,” the anti-gay, anti-choice Duggar recently told a Baptist website, The Pathway. “God is expanding our borders through the national media.”

The Change.org petition asking TLC to cancel “19 Kids and Counting” garnered over 180,000 signatures, but the Duggar dad says they added 50,000 more Facebook fans while it was popular a few weeks ago.

Calling LGBT people and equality advocates “a small group creating this fuss,” Duggar claimed the petition gave his family “more exposure,” but it “won’t succeed,” he insisted. “Our show is the number one show on TLC.”

Meanwhile, right-wing and religious sites are mischaracterizing what was at the heart of the Change.org petition and just some of the reasons why the LGBT and progressive communities are opposed to the Duggars’ actions.

“Agree with them or not, you have to respect the Duggars for sticking to their principles and not conforming their beliefs to popular opinion — even when it ostracizes them,” The Stir, a blog at the right-leaning Cafe Mom website wrote. “They have done nothing other that stand firm in their belief that marriage should be between one man and one woman, and no matter what anyone says, that’s their right to believe.”

In actuality, as the petition mentioned, Michelle Duggar recorded a robocall opposing a non-discrimination ordinance, that was sent to Fayetteville voters. Here’s part of what she said:

“I don’t believe the citizens of Fayetteville would want males with past child predator convictions that claim they are female to have a legal right to enter private areas that are reserved for women and girls. I doubt that Fayetteville parents would stand for a law that would endanger their daughters or allow them to be traumatized by a man joining them in their private space. We should never place the preference of an adult over the safety and innocence of a child. Parents, who do you want undressing next to your daughter at the public swimming pool’s private changing area?”

The Duggars also donated $10,000 to fight the ordinance. While the city council approved it this summer, the Duggars managed to convince voters last month to repeal it.
