  • Popular TLC Reality Show Star Conflates Trans Women With 'Males With Past Child Predator Convictions'

The star of a popular, long-running TLC reality show has recorded an anti-trans robocall to fight an Arkansas LGBT non-discrimination ordinance.

In 2008 the Duggar family landed in America's living rooms. Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar (image), Independent Baptists, now have 19 children, hence the current name of their popular reality show, "19 Kids and Counting," which is aired by the TLC Network. TLC, which reaches almost 98 million American households, is owned by Discovery Communications. In turn, Discovery, an international media conglomerate, reaches 1.5 billion subscribers. Animal Planet is a popular Discovery network.

    But back to the Duggars.

The extra-large family lives in Tontitown, Arkansas, just 11 miles from Fayetteville.

Tonight, the Fayetteville City Council is scheduled to vote on a non-discrimination ordinance, like many cities and towns of all sizes across the nation have.

Michelle Duggar has recorded what a transphobic robocall to fight the ordinance.

"Hello, this is Michelle Duggar," Michelle says in this recording first published by Good As You's Jeremy Hooper. "I’m calling to inform you of some shocking news that would affect the safety of Northwest Arkansas women and children. The Fayetteville City Council is voting on an ordinance this Tuesday night that would allow men — yes, I said men — to use women's and girls' restrooms, locker rooms, showers, sleeping areas and other areas that are designated for females only."

"I don’t believe the citizens of Fayetteville would want males with past child predator convictions that claim they are female to have a legal right to enter private areas that are reserved for women and girls. I doubt that Fayetteville parents would stand for a law that would endanger their daughters or allow them to be traumatized by a man joining them in their private space. We should never place the preference of an adult over the safety and innocence of a child. Parents, who do you want undressing next to your daughter at the public swimming pool’s private changing area?"

    Listen:

The Advocate notes the "recording was issued with support from Arkansas' Family Council, a conservative organization that claims that the bill would 'infringe on the rights of churches as well as religious business people.'"

Hooper adds that "TLC has long ignored the family's political actions. This is no longer tenable, at least if the network wants to call the Duggars' show 'reality TV.'"

And in fact, Josh Duggar, Michelle and Jim Bob's first-born, is the Executive Director of the Family Research Council's political arm, FRC Action. A quick look through his Twitter feed shows him rubbing elbows with the religious right's favorite politicians, from Governors Rick Perry and Bobby Jindal, to former Gov. Mike Huckabee, Sen. Tim Scott, Rep. Steve King, and the Benham Brothers -- likely none of whom would support Fayetteville's non-discrimination ordinance.

The Arkansas Family Council's website notes it is associated with Focus on the Family.

Scott Amundsen: Well, Scott, if she said what she meant, then she said absolutely nothing about trans people at all. The only descriptor she used was “Men”. You know what, you may be correct. But my point is this: Her call can be interpreted in at least two different ways, and the way you see the issue, the Duggars, and really the state of gender politics at large affects how you read that. I could care less about the Duggars, one way or the other. But it bothers me that people are using such a meaning-ambiguous passage as a rallying point. If you want to condemn the Duggars for being homophobic, or trans-insensitive, there is far more appropriate evidence of their beliefs. Go find some of those, and use them for your point. Or go read Chapter 119 yourself, and argue that it’s at least possible (though again, somewhat ambiguous), that, since gender-segregated facilities are not, in fact, illegal under this act, the whole argument is moot. But to use this, perhaps THE most ambiguous of any of the Duggers’ comments on sex, to assault the Duggers on their view of Trans- and Homosexuality is ridiculous. Even you have to admit that, when read carefully and with an open mind, there is nothing intrinsically hateful about this comment – that is a perception brought in from the outside. I will, in turn admit that, if Mrs. Duggar did indeed mean her statement innocently, it was definitely very poorly worded, especially in the current political and social climate.

Zachary Olson: Bullshit. The second paragraph is merely a continuation of the SAME THOUGHT she expressed in the first. There is no C; Michelle Duggar is not sufficiently well-informed about transgender issues to make the distinction you are suggesting. Neither is she intelligent enough. She said what she meant and she meant what she said.

TL;DR version of my previous comment:
Sentence one says, “This law allows A to do B.”
Sentence two says, “C will be able to do B.”
This does not make A=C… there is no logical basis behind that. It MAY infer that C is a SUBSET of A; however, it does not by any means state that explicitly.

So… There are two separate sentences here that you all seem to be combining into one. First:

“The Fayetteville City Council is voting on an ordinance this Tuesday night that would allow men — yes, I said men — to use women’s and girls’ restrooms, locker rooms, showers, sleeping areas and other areas that are designated for females only.”

Ignorant, very possibly, as this doesn’t take into account the mental aspect of gender, but still, not directly hateful. Then, second:

“I don’t believe the citizens of Fayetteville would want males with past child predator convictions that claim they are female to have a legal right to enter private areas that are reserved for women and girls.”

This is a separate thought. Unless explicitly forbidden by the way the law was written, a law allowing biological men that are mentally and emotionally women to enter a female restroom would also allow other men claiming this same thing to enter, as well. This includes those who would do so for malignant purposes.

“by the way, being rude in comments doesn’t make you look smarter…”

Then take your own advice and quit it.

Scott, you must admit that telling Corinne not to speak to you like she is a teacher and you a student is humorous considering that is EXACTLY what you did to her with your first comment… going so far as to tell her to look up the word conflates if it “confuses you.” If that isn’t the pot calling the kettle black then I don’t know what is… by the way, being rude in comments doesn’t make you look smarter…

The lunacy never ends does it?

    • commented 2014-08-21 00:36:19 -0400
Oh for Chrissakes you really had to twist your brain into a pretzel to come up with that one.

I know what I heard; kindly do not speak to me like you are a teacher and I a student.

    • commented 2014-08-21 00:12:24 -0400
@scott, I completely disagree. For the record, I wouldn’t have posted a comment without looking up conflate just to be sure or without listening to the recording. You are basing your judgement only on what you see and hear here. It is obvious to me that there is room to interpret it differently than the headline suggests. Think critically. Don’t accept everything you read just as it is written. And, no, I don’t that the robocall says just what you think it does either. You are predisposed to believe that she is saying that all transgender women have a criminal history. I see three options here. 1. She is not saying quite what it sounds like she is saying, 2. She doesn’t have the brains enough to wipe her own ass, or 3. She is part of a massive conspiracy. I reject #2 on the basis of not assuming that people are that stupid and #3 on the basis of the fact that conspiracies don’t work if there are too many people involved. It’s not logical. I therefore conclude #1, which does, as I said allow for the possibility that she is of somewhat limited understanding but not not completely devoid of brains. And just to be clear here, I completely disagree with everything she is saying even given my interpretation. I’m not suggesting that this kind of nonsense is acceptable. I’m merely saying that logical and reasoning people can see it for the nonsense that is without being lead by the nose into an emotional conclusion.

Corinne Cookshaw: Try listening to the recording of the robocall. She not only did EXACTLY what the headline above stated (look up the word “conflate” if you are confused), she actually took it a step further and suggested that transwomen are in fact men with a criminal history dressing as women. And the transcript of what she said is right there in black and white. I do not see how you can make the claim that the headline was misleading; if anything it understated the situation.

I enjoy reading the articles on The New Civil Rights Movement. But I’m getting a little tired of the misleading headlines. The strongest arguments, the ones that will speak to the most people and really make them think are the ones made through logic, not emotion. The headline of this article suggests that the woman in question believes that transgender women are sexual predators. Upon reading the article, it would appear that what she actually believes is that sexual predators will take advantage of the law by disguising themselves as women to get into the washrooms (or perhaps she believes that true transgender women don’t exist?). Naive, ridiculous, insensitive, uniformed but not the same thing as the headline implies at all. I want to share the messages from NCRM. But I often will chose not to share something on FB for the very reason that the headlines engage in sensationalism. This practice reduces credibility and weakens the arguments set forth in the article. It is possible that more people will read the article with a headline like that, and I suppose that is good for business and the bottom line, but since the people most likely to read the article when it has a headline like that are the people who are already in agreement with what is being said in the article, it does nothing for the causes being fought for. Please consider whether your goal is to preach to the choir or recruit more people to join the choir.

      VAGINA- it’s not a clown car. ^^^^^

    • commented 2014-08-20 12:15:17 -0400
Aside from the blatant lies in that horrendous robo-call, what does this idiotic woman think: that if a transwoman walks into the Ladies room the cisgender women in the room are going to peek under the stall walls to see what kind of plumbing she has?

      Who’s the sick one now??

I see a typo and I do apologize for that, That was supposed to have said, But seems as though her husband is only interested in one thing, That clown car she calls a Vagina

    • commented 2014-08-20 12:04:28 -0400
I just say, why doesn’t everyone stop watching programs on TLC because of this bigoted back woods person, I am not saying she is stupid mind you far from it. But only a person who is so deep in the woods would thing a trans-woman as a male predator, who wants to rape little children is basically what she is saying.I have many trans friends of both sexes who are hard working individuals, who work with kids, coaching and nurturing them,. The predators are those you hear everyday who preach the word of God, Claiming they are pastors, preachers, and then the coaches, teachers and people we trust with our children who are molesting them .
And might I add one thing off topic. But seems as thosugh her husband is only interested in one thing that clown car she calls a Vagina

She needs to hear what Pat Robertson has to say about transgender people-he is supportive !! I couldn’t believe it, but I heard it clear as day.

The Duggar’s are part of a religious sect/organization/faith/denomination known as Quiverfull. The whole idea of quiverfull is to have as many children as possible, raise them as ultra-conservative Christians so that they can out produce the rapidly growing Muslims. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quiverfull

Michael you’re probably right. Or, sadly they will end their life like Rick Warren’s Son.
It just boggles my mind. How does a person make a leap that a Male Child Predator is the same as a Trans Woman?? One has been convicted of hurting children, and one has not.
