Chevrolet made a big statement last night by airing the first-ever ads during the Olympics to include same-sex couples and families. The ads, part of a series, feature a same-sex couple marrying in Cape Cod, several families headed by same-sex couples, and gay teen scientist, genius Jack Andraka.
“Like the old love, the new love starts with a kiss,” one of Chevy’s ads in their “#TheNew” series begins. “The new us, like the old us, is built on the things that matter most.”
An ad for the Chevrolet Traverse says, “and while what it means to be a family hasn’t changed, what a family looks like, has,” concluding it’s “for whatever shape your family takes.”
ABC News reports that Chevy, in a statement, claims, “these ads … are not intended as any political commentary,” but notes that “some advertising experts say the commercials make a pretty clear statement.”
“Actions speak louder than words,” said Allen Adamson, managing director of the New York office of branding firm Landor Associates. “The action of putting a spot on the Olympics is far more powerful than a press release. It’s a very clear statement of what they believe Chevy stands for.”
GLAAD CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said the ads “truly reflect the fabric of our nation, which today includes gay and lesbian families.”
