Sherman Hemsley, Actor Best-Known As ‘George Jefferson,’ Dies At 74
Sherman Hemsley, the actor best-known for his portrayal of the character “George Jefferson,” has died at the age of 74, reportedly from natural causes. Hemsley, who was unmarried and had no children, became popular first in All in the Family and in its spin-off, The Jeffersons, playing the head of a newly-rich African-American family living in primarily-white neighborhoods.
All in the Family ran from 1973-1978, and The Jeffersons ran from 1975-1985.
Overall, Hemsley acted in 59 TV shows and movies.
