DeMint’s Homophobic Comments Force Gay GOP Group GOProud To Drop Support
Chris Barron, Chair of GOProud, the Tea Party alternative to the Log Cabin Republicans, and the host of the recently… highlighted… fundraiser, HomoCon, starring Ann Coulter, is no stranger to extremism and right-wing nuttery. But Barron and GOProud are taking a stand against Tea Party favorite, GOP Senator Jim DeMint.
DeMint recently said that gays should not be allowed to teach (in keeping with the 73% of self-identified Republicans who agree) and nor should unmarried women sleeping with their boyfriends.
DeMint’s stand on social issues is a throw-back to the 1950s, a “Leave It to Beaver,” or, “Father Knows Best” attitude. And unacceptable for an America of the twenty-first century.
(You’ll remember last year when DeMint said a gay president would be “immoral.”)
Barron says DeMint “has given up the ability to lead on any issues conservatives care about,” and calls his comments “outrageous,” and “bizarre.” Agreed. He also claims that the Tea Party is not concerned about social issues. Make no mistake — that’s wrong, and we’ll be seeing even more Tea Party nuttiness focused on social issues.
