  • Conservatives Demanding 'Fascist, Anti-Christian' Gay Pride Flag Be Taken Down

Some right wing pundits and their fellow conservatives are angered at the movement successfully removing Confederate flags. Now they are demanding the gay pride flag be taken down too.

    Awww look at that! #USEmbassy #London #UK #pride #gaypride #lgbt

A photo posted by Andrija Petkeviciute (@andrijamp) on

It's taken a few decades and the horrific murder of nine Black people in a Bible study church group but finally the movement to take down the Confederate flag is successfully proceeding. In the works are the removal of the flag – which isn't even the actual Confederate flag – from the South Carolina State House, Virginia license plates, and the Mississippi State flag. On the corporate side, Walmart, Amazon, Sears, eBay, and now Etsy have agreed to stop selling Confederate flag merchandise. Expect more as Americans realize the flag some see as "heritage" is actually a flag supporting oppression and hate.

Of course, not everyone sees that, and some conservatives have a rather unique feeling toward the gay pride flag, or LGBT pride flag, or the pride flag – whatever you care to call it.

While the historic rainbow-inspired flag has earned a place in the Museum of Modern Art, and atop many corporate headquarters and government buildings, anti-gay conservatives are demanding it be removed.

RELATED: Young Republican Writer: 'Obama's America' Has Become 'United States of Gaymeria'

Breitbart writer John Nolte, whose work represents some of the more unhinged articles at the site founded by LGBT rights supporter Andrew Breitbart, today sent these tweets:

Those were followed by a piece, "Take Down The Fascist, Anti-Christian Gay-Pride Flag."

"Under the banner of what is dishonestly called a gay pride or gay 'rights' flag, hate, fascism, and intolerance has festered for years, specifically against Christians and conservatives," Nolte claims. "Under the auspices of a 'rights and equality' symbol, Leftists have been on a rampage to take way the rights of others through bullying, lies, and online terrorism."

He also claims that in the name of the gay pride flag, "people are outed against their will, terrorized out of business merely for being Christian, bullied and harassed for thoughtcrimes; moreover, 'hate crimes' are being manufactured to keep us divided, Christians are refused service, death threats are hurled, and Christianity is regularly smeared as hate speech."

If individuals wish to fly this symbol of hate, oppression and bigotry on their own property, that is their choice in a free country. It is unconscionable, however, that this symbol of intolerance is allowed to fly above government-owned buildings.

Of course, no government building has the gay pride flag flying 365 days a year, nor is there any federal law requiring it.

Ironically, Nolte writes he is "also in favor of removing the Rebel Flag from the grounds of the South Carolina Capitol. Equivalence is not the issue here. Hate and intolerance is."

Nolte is not alone, of course.

American Family Association's Bryan Fischer offered up his usual Nazi comparisons to "Big Gay."

"If we are going to remove symbols of oppression from our culture," Fischer said, as Right Wing Watch reports. "if we come to the point where we say any flag that represents bigotry, any flag that represents hatred, any flag that represents slavery or oppression needs to be removed, then I want to suggest to you that the next flag to go ought to be the rainbow flag of the Gay Reich."

"The rainbow flag represents the gay lobby, it represents Big Gay, it represents what I'm calling for the first time today, I'm introducing a new term: the Gay Reich," he continued. "They've got a flag just like the Nazis had their flag."

A few more calls for the gay pride flag to come:

I do not understand how anybody who had made it through 7th grade can equate a rainbow flag (a symbol of inclusion and equality) with a Confederate flag (a symbol of treasonous rebellion against our nation and the subjugation of an entire race of people). There is simply no comparison. To try to make that comparison is beyond misguided – it’s absurd and borders on the imbecilic.
Furthermore, right wing Christian extremists need to get over the idea that they hold some kind of monopoly on the Christian religion. There are many Christian sects and churches (as well as conservative and reform Jewish sects and temples) that support, sanction, and perform same sex marriages. There are plenty of gay Christians in our nation. You do not OWN the religion.
In the lingo of the youth of today: get over yourself.

I’m still wondering why people would think that a flag of inclusion is a flag of hate and divisiveness? Not one person that has posted, that is against the flag, has said why they think it’s divisive. The only thing you could possibly come up with is, “I don’t like fags”. That is not an answer, that is a feeling, and not accepted as a response. Anyone care to let us know why you think the rainbow flag is divisive without your “feelings” being involved?

      Why should we do that?

    • commented 2016-06-27 10:40:09 -0400
…. light the rainbow flag on fire. Do it publicly. Do it often.

Did the Gay Rights movement declare war on the United States, fight for four years, kill thousands, and eventually lose, and I missed it all? Remember, if something offends you, you have a First Amendment right to be offended! Exercise it freely.

@daniel Gratton – the rainbow flag symbolizes equallity for all. Exactly who does “everybody” leave out?

    • commented 2015-07-01 04:29:01 -0400
He’s actually right, Government should only fly official flags and not flags that represent any one group UNLESS you are going to allow others to fly their flags along side the LGBT flag. The LGBT flag does not represent everyone so it shouldn’t be promoted by government, but i realize Liberals only care about the law or fairness or equality when it’s in their favor.

Dave McAll, your hatred and fear is blinding you. When you hate as much as you obviously do, all you will see is hatred around you. What a sad way to live. LGBT people pose no threat to you, it’s your fear that has turned into anger. This country is evolving as it must and should. The flag stands for unity.

    • commented 2015-06-30 16:17:39 -0400
Dave McAll: Almost all the gay people I know are themselves Christians. There are Christian churches that marry gay people. There are pastors, priests, and bishops who are gay. How on earth can you call a flag they like hateful? No, it is a flag that stands for unity under historic persecution by many people, including extremist Jews, Muslims, and Christians — and others. It unifies their cause to be treated equally with others. It is not anti anything.

The lgbt flag is a flag of hate and bigotry. Have you ever read any comments from the lgbt everything is bigtory towards christians. Your flag is a flag of hate, make any excuses you want. It is a flag of hate

The Confederate flag is a symbol of treason, racism, and slavery.

The pride flag is a positive symbol of inclusion, equality, and diversity.

If butt hurt, whiney neo-Confederates can’t recognize the difference, then they’re as dumb as rocks.

I can’t name one single instance of a Christian ever being killed by a gay person. Ever. But how many LGBT people have been killed by so-called Christians? Too many to count.

The Right Wing has lost the culture war. They’re just too stupid to realize it yet.

Please don’t make the mistake of believing that people like this represent all of Christianity. They certainly don’t represent me as a gay Christian. It’s just as bad as believing that all Muslims are bad because of the terrorists. The true problem is with fundamentalist zealots that world their religion around like it’s supposed to be some sort of weapon, never realizing that the weapon is being best used against themselves and doesn’t reflect the true spirit of the religion they claim to cherish.

Oh please! Then leave the Union again. See if we care this time.

    • commented 2015-06-24 08:39:18 -0400
How many Christians were lynched, beaten and tortured by LGBT mobs in white hoods carrying the Rainbow flag? Does anybody have those figures? Just wondering!

    • commented 2015-06-24 08:17:21 -0400
There is nothing so beautiful in the world that a “christian” cannot destroy. In 25 years I’ve gone from a general respect of “christians” to absolutely despising them. Pride, ignorance, arrogance and dominion are their middle names.

    • commented 2015-06-23 23:56:17 -0400
Well now that we know what the bigots and hatemongers think, lets find out what real Christians have to say.

    • commented 2015-06-23 23:17:29 -0400
Why do I get a sense of childish “so there” from all these tweets? Not to mention the feeling that these people probably think they’re making a clever, relevant point.

    • commented 2015-06-23 21:58:55 -0400
So they are saying that the Rainbow flag displayed at my United Church of Christ congregation is “anti Christian”?
I am at a loss for a polite way to say BITE ME!!!
And I am a straight, white middle aged male.

    • commented 2015-06-23 21:47:17 -0400
Why aren’t these ridiculous and provably untrue statements EVER challenged by the mainstream media?

    • commented 2015-06-23 21:01:00 -0400
“Under the banner of what is dishonestly called a gay pride or gay ‘rights’ flag, hate, fascism, and intolerance has festered for years, specifically against Christians and conservatives,” Nolte claims. “Under the auspices of a ‘rights and equality’ symbol, Leftists have been on a rampage to take way the rights of others through bullying, lies, and online terrorism.”"

You haven’t lost any rights dude.

      Bruce Majors:
“Nolte, like some of the posters here before me, conflates gay people and the establishment gay lobby. The rainbow flag belongs to the former, the fascism and attempt at thought control, smearing and silencing comes mainly from the latter.”

The rainbow flag does not “belong” to anyone. It’s a symbol of pride. Pride meaning “dignity and self respect regarding an aspect of one’s identity”. In this case, it’s the pride people take in their sexual orientation and gender identity. We live in a society that marginalizes, oppresses, and actively discriminates against LGBT people on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity.

As for your ridiculous rhetoric, there is no such thing as “thought control”. No one is attempting to control, manipulate, and regulate the thoughts of others. What has happened is that people are using their freedom of speech to CRITICIZE those who espouse discrimination and bigotry. The internet has afforded countless people the opportunity to speak up and voice their outrage, anger, and frustration. Sadly, people like you seem to think these voices-which often form a chorus demanding equal rights for all-is some for of thought control. But what it comes down to is you folks don’t like being criticized. You don’t like these uppity LGBT folks not remaining silent, but standing up and demanding their rights.

As for smearing? Please. Even if you could cite one example of smearing, that’s hardly indicative of the actions of the vast majority of LGBT people or LGBT organizations. I suspect you’re whining about “smearing” bc you don’t like it when people accurately quote what bigots say and then throw it back at them.

And “silencing”. Don’t make me fucking laugh. No one has been silenced. We continue to hear-every single fucking day-from those who oppose equal rights for LGBT people. They speak all the time on every form of social media. They speak from everywhere. If they were silenced, we wouldn’t actually hear them.

If you’re going to espouse your hate and bigotry, at least try to be honest about it. Your little screed below is one of the most dishonest, disingenuous rants I’ve read in some time. It is so completely divorced from reality that I’m wondering if you dwell on Earth=X.

    • commented 2015-06-23 19:13:09 -0400
Your headline and article are inaccurate and tendentious. “Conservatives” from Governor Nicky Haley to pundit Charles Krauthammer to the editors of National Review magazine to John Nolte himself, have all called for getting rid of the confederate flag. Indeed a former GOP governor in SC had it taken down and a subsequent Democrat put it back. Bill Clinton used it in his 1992 campaign and HIllary supporters used it in her 2008 campaign.

Nolte, like some of the posters here before me, conflates gay people and the establishment gay lobby. The rainbow flag belongs to the former, the fascism and attempt at thought control, smearing and silencing comes mainly from the latter.

    • commented 2015-06-23 18:57:54 -0400
While there are definitely some gay conservatives and/or gay Christians, you’ll find that it is the ultra-right religious fringe conservatives who are the ones holding a steadfast fanatical belief in an ideology which is close to Fascism, not LGBT folks.

Also, it wasn’t the pride flag being flown by those foreign enemy troops when they staged the sudden and deliberate surprise attack on the U.S. military installation at Fort Sumter. Come back in about 154 years and we can talk about the pride flag…

    • commented 2015-06-23 18:43:10 -0400
There is an undeniably HUGE difference between the gay pride flag and that of the Confederacy. When a stand is taken against a bully, that bully’s rights are not being infringed upon. Similarly, the fight against religious intolerance is not equivalent to a fight against religion. The bigotry being displayed here is without a doubt that of the homophobes, not of the oppressed.

    • commented 2015-06-23 18:38:23 -0400
It’s cruel to fly a flag that reminds Christians of how they were once enslaved by gay people.

    • commented 2015-06-23 18:34:29 -0400
Christians are just SILLY. God gave Noah a rainbow as a covenant that he wouldn’t flood the earth again. It’s in the goddamned bible in Genesis. Even when they THINK they’re being clever they’re still hypocrites to the core. Or they’re anti old testament maybe.

    • commented 2015-06-23 18:09:50 -0400
So what Government building is flying the ’Gay Pride ’ flag. None that I am aware of, so the false attack on this idea means… What in the grand scheme of things?

    • commented 2015-06-23 18:00:44 -0400
That’s rich! The rainbow flag represents love and equality. We all know what the confederate flag represents.

    • commented 2015-06-23 18:00:21 -0400
@walker Thomas – yes – and it’s also the symbol of Reverend Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow Coalition. I’m sure there are other organizations that use the rainbow as their logo.

    • commented 2015-06-23 17:33:25 -0400
If it’s a trade, I’m ok with that. I can’t think of a single murderer who flew the rainbow flag. I suppose we could, as we have in the past, start sporting pink triangles.
