Rachel Maddow: How The ‘Ex-Gay’ Movement Has Harmed Every Gay Person’s Life
Rachel Maddow last night delivered two excellent and in-depth segments about the “ex-gay” movement, how it came into being, and why the anti-gay right has been able to ruin lives because of so-called “ex-gay” science. Frankly, there is so much “connecting the dots” here, even I learned a lot.
Many modern-day LGBTs simply ignore news about the “ex-gay” movement because it’s quackery, but Maddow explains how anti-gay hate groups are actuality based on research from Dr. Robert L. Spitzer and others.
Maddow also interviews Gabriel Arana, who broke the story about Dr. Spitzer denouncing his 2001 study, thus effectively debunking the entire ex-gay industry. Arana’s story in The America Prospect, “My So-Called Ex-Gay Life,” may be Pulitzer-worthy. It’s that important.
What does the ex-gay industry have to do with you? Every anti-gay hate group, every anti-gay organization, much of religion, basically everyone who denounces homosexuality and LGBT rights, like marriage equality and the right to serve in the military, or the right to not be fired for being gay, stems from the ex-gay industry and their “work.”
This is the must-see TV you must watch. It’s fascinating and shocking and if more people knew about this, the state of LGBT rights and acceptance would be decades ahead.
You must watch both!
And after, read Wayne Besen’s excellent piece: “Commentary: Still the Iconoclast, Dr. Robert Spitzer Renounces His Infamous ‘Ex-Gay’ Study.”
