Trump ‘Embarrassed and Pissed’ the ‘Low Energy’ Senate Candidate He Endorsed Lost
‘A Barrage of Angry Venting’
President Donald Trump is “embarrassed and pissed” Luther Strange, the U.S. Senate candidate he endorsed and campaigned for lost Tuesday night, and is furious at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for convincing him to throw his weight against “Judge” Roy Moore.Â
After attending a Manhattan fundraiser Tuesday night for major donors at the famous Le Cirque restaurant, Trump, CNN reports, aboard Air Force One watched Fox News call the race for Moore. “Judge” Moore is the twice-elected and twice-removed former Alabama state Supreme Court Chief Justice who has a lengthy history of blatant homophobia, racism, Islamophobia, far right wing religious extremism, and indifference to the law. In short, he is an Alabama Donald Trump.
Upon hearing the news, CNN reports Trump engaged in “a barrage of angry venting at his political team and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who had consolidated establishment GOP support behind Strange.”
The President “felt misled by McConnell and his political team,” who encouraged him to back Strange. Trump in private described Strange as “low energy,” and “went to bed ’embarrassed and pissed’ following the election loss.”
“Losing is bad for his brand,” another GOP adviser to the White House said of Trump.
One person Trump has not appeared to blame: himself.
Trump Tuesday night called Moore to congratulate him. He also deleted several tweets he had posted supporting Luther Strange, including two that said “he will never let you down!“
