Mark Cady, the Supreme Court Justice who wrote Friday’s unanimous landmark ruling legalizing gay marriage in Iowa, was appointed in 1998 by four-term Republican Governor Terry Branstad. Richard N. Palmer, who wrote the majority opinion in Connecticut’s gay marriage case, was appointed in 1993 by Lowell P. Weicker, Jr., an Independent governor who was a former Republican U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator and Republican Presidential candidate. Massachusetts Supreme Court Chief Justice Margaret Marshall was appointed in 1996 by Republican Governor William F. Weld.
