Trump’s First Address to Congress Drew Far Less Than Obama’s Did
Obama’s First Address Drew 52.37 Million Viewers
While pundits are tripping over themselves to try to claim Trump delivered a great speech Tuesday night, the American people weren’t buying it. Across seven major TV networks that carried the speech, Trump drew a significantly smaller audience than President Barack Obama did in his first address to a joint session of Congress in 2009.
According to Variety, Trump’s speech attracted a 17 percent smaller audience than Obama’s did across the seven main networks measured by Nielsen:Â ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC.
Nielsen reports Trump received a 27.8 share versus Obama’s 33.4 share. (These are not millions, they are a proprietary scale created by Nielsen based on total number of television sets.)
President Barack Obama’s first address drew 52.37 million viewers across six networks:Â Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Telemundo, and Univision.Â
Final numbers will be released later Wednesday afternoon.
