DEM DEBATE: Clinton Is Asked, ‘If You Get Indicted, Will You Drop Out?’ (Video)
Clinton’s Emails One of First Topics at Tuesday’s Democratic Debate
Hillary Clinton says she will not be indicted over the ongoing investigation into her State Department emails. At the Democratic debate Tuesday night Clinton assured Univision anchor Jorge Ramos, “that’s not going to happen.”
When asked if she would drop out of the presidential race if indicted, Clinton grew frustrated, saying, “Oh for goodness, that is not going to happen. I’m not even answering that question.”
FiveThirtyEight’s Carl Bialik, writing about the debate, noted that “Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus, a longstanding critic of Clinton’s email practices, wrote yesterday that Clinton is very unlikely to be indicted.”
“There are plenty of unattractive facts but not a lot of clear evidence of criminality, and we tend to forget the distinction,†American University law professor Stephen Vladeck, an expert on prosecutions involving classified information (and, disclosure, my cousin), told Marcus. “This is really just a political firestorm, not a criminal case.â€
Ramos also pressed Clinton about who gave her “permission” to use a private server. She was forced to explain that not only did she not, as Secretary of State, need to ask anyone’s permission, there is plenty of precedent in having one.Â
CNN reported last month that “Colin Powell and top staffers for Condoleezza Rice received classified information through personal email accounts, according to a new report from State Department investigators.”
