An Alabama mayor is under fire after writing on Facebook that LGBT people must be killed in order to fix the nation’s problems. Along with his list of those who should be executed are socialists and people who are pro-choice.
“We live in a society where homosexuals lecture us on morals, transvestites lecture us on human biology, baby killers lecture us on human rights and socialists lecture us on economics,” read a meme Carbon Hill Mayor Mark Chambers posted to Facebook, according to WBRC.
A friend of Chambers apparently agreed, writing: “By giving the minority more rights than the majority. I hate to think of the country my grandkids will live in unless somehow we change and I think that will take a revolution.”
Chambers responded: “The only way to change it would be to kill the problem out. I know it’s bad to say but without killing them out there’s no way to fix it.”
A WBRC reporter called Mayor Chambers, who at first denied he was responsible for the offensive postings.
“I don’t think I posted that. I think that’s somebody else’s post,” the mayor said.
“So, you’re saying someone is using your identity on Facebook,” reporter Brittany Dionne asked.
“I don’t know,” was Chambers’ response, before hanging up.
In a second phone call Chambers insisted his remarks were being taken out of context but also defended them by saying they were meant to be private.
“I never said anything about killing out gays or anything like that,” Chambers also said, after attacking immigrants in America as “ungrateful” and accusing them of taking over the country.
Chambers “voiced his comments were in response to a civil war happening in the United States,” WBRC noted. He also talked about a “revolution.”
An apology was posted to his Facebook page, but the page has since been set to private.
WBRC reporter Josh Gauntt posted a screenshot. In it, Chambers apologizes and says he alone is responsible for his remarks, but he also insists again that they were taken out of context. He also claims his comment was “not targeting the LGBTQ community.”
