Mnuchin Denies Democrats’ Request for Trump’s Tax Returns – Says He Will Confer with Barr

President Donald Trump’s Secretary of the Treasury, in possible violation of federal law, is denying House Democrats’ request for six years of Trump’s tax returns.

Secretary Steve Mnuchin is “saying the department could not complete its review in time for Democrats’ Wednesday deadline,” The Washington Post reports.

Mnuchin, who previously had announced he would comply with federal law, appeared to be stonewalling.

Mnuchin in a letter to House Democrats appeared to suggest the request for Trump’s tax returns could be politically motivated, and “said Treasury would consult with the Justice Department to review the request.”

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-MA) last week requested Trump’s returns be provided to the Committee by today.

“The Committee’s request raises serious issues concerning the constitutional scope of congressional investigative authority, the legitimacy of the asserted legislative purpose, and the constitutional rights of American citizens,” Mnuchin says, flouting federal law.
