Khashoggi’s murder, believed to be by the government of Saudi Arabia and at the direction of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has been covered up with the assistance of President Donald Trump and his Senior Advisor, Jared Kushner.
TIME’s editor-in -chief explains the decision:
“This is the first time we’ve chosen someone no longer alive as Person of the Year, but it’s also very rare that a person’s influence grows so immensely in death.” TIME Editor-in-Chief @efelsenthal talks Jamal Khashoggi’s 2018 Person of the Year cover pic.twitter.com/KTbgsK0AFt

Here’s how people are responding to TIME’s choice.
MSNBC Justice & Security Analyst Matthew Miller actually picked Khashoggi one day before Tuesday morning’s announcement:
I vote Khashoggi. In death, he has exposed the utter moral bankruptcy of the leadership of both the most powerful country in the world and the most powerful country in the Middle East. https://t.co/uaIXYIpqbK

And Washington Post Global Opinions editor, Karen Attiah, who was Khashoggi’s boss:
*Raises hand* #khashoggi https://t.co/ibBX89fGlW

“I can’t breathe”.
Eric Garner’s last words in 2014.
The same as Jamal Khashoggi’s last words in 2018.

Regardless who may appear to be winning, let us always remember that the leaders in this moment – in any moment – are not those who attack our values and Human Rights. Our leaders are those who defend them. #TIMEPOY https://t.co/G9GTdTR9lW
