American Bar Association: Postpone Kavanaugh Vote Until an FBI Investigation Can Be Completed

Warns Senate’s and Supreme Court’s Reputation at Stake
The American Bar Association, which fully endorsed Judge Brett Kavanaugh to become a U.S. Supreme Court justice, is calling on the Senate Judiciary Committee and the full Senate to postpone voting on Kavanaugh’s confirmation until an FBI investigation can be re-opened and completed.
“The basic principles that underscore the Senate’s constitutional duty of advice and consent on federal judicial nominees require nothing less than a careful examination of the accusations and facts by the FBI,” the letter reads.
Sent late Thursday night to Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley and Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein, the ABA says appointment to the Supreme Court “is simply too important to rush to a vote.”
The Association, which has over 400,000 members, warns of the potential damage to the Senate’s and the Supreme Court’s reputation and credibility if Kavanaugh is confirmed before an investigation into the allegations of sexual misconduct can be completed.
It “would not only have a lasting impact on the Senate’s reputation, but it will also negatively affect the great trust necessary for the American people to have in the Supreme Court.”
