GOP EXTREMISM
Mitch McConnell Just Canceled the Senate’s August Recess – So They Can Confirm More Extremist Judges
More Judges Confirmed, Less Time for Democrats to Campaign. For McConnell, It’s a Win-Win
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has just canceled most of the August recess, with the goal of confirming more of President Donald Trump‘s judicial nominees.
Trump, thanks to the right wing think tanks, supporters in the Senate, and especially McConnell, has been extraordinarily successful at filling openings on the federal bench. Today one in eight circuit court judges is a Trump appointee. These are lifetime appointments. And many of these nominees hold disturbing, right wing extremist positions.
McConnell is nothing if not strategic.
“Democrats are defending 26 seats, including two independent seats in Maine and Vermont, while Republicans have nine on the ballot,” in the upcoming midterms, The Washington Post notes.
That leaves Democratic Senators with a conundrum.
“Attend to Senate business during time they could otherwise use to campaign back home or remain in their states and face criticism that they are shirking their responsibilities in government.”
