Trump’s Latest Tweets Are Gaslighting Americans – Here’s How

Published

on

President Donald Trump over the past 18 hours or so has been pounding out tweets and making remarks to the press that are filled with lies. How is this different from any day of the week that ends in “y,” you ask? Here’s how.

Trump is insisting – with exactly zero evidence – that under President Barack Obama’s direction, the FBI and possibly other federal agencies, embedded at least one if not more spies into his presidential campaign with the specific purpose of working to help Hillary Clinton win.

There is exactly zero evidence to support these lies. Trump doesn’t even attempt to offer any, aside from “quoting” various Fox News personalities.

He also quotes former United States Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, the man whose new book says Russia’s efforts swayed the election to Trump. (Probably not the source you want to go to if you’re Trump.)

Maddow, by the way, had Clapper on last night. Here’s the run-up clip detailing his findings:

So, is there any truth, any scrap of truth to Trump’s claims?

No.

What is he talking about?

Reports in The New York Times and The Washington Post over the past few days that a long-time occasional FBI informant (who NCRM will not name) had a few conversations with several Trump campaign officials before the election. You’ll remember the FBI opened an investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia in July of 2016, after a very drunk George Papadopoulos told an Australian official they had “dirt” on Hillary Clinton, via a treasure trove of her emails, which they received from Russia.

So the FBI had their informant chat with Papadopoulos, and Carter Page, who is also tied to Russia. The informant also spoke with campaign co-chair Sam Clovis, although it’s not clear that was even related to an FBI investigation. (Quartz’s Max de Haldevang has a good primer on all this.)

In Trumpworld, this is “spying” on his campaign.

This isn’t spying, it’s protecting America. It doesn’t come close to spying, and in no way is it an informant embedded in the campaign. Don’t forget, the FBI was so concerned Team Trump was compromised by Russia they issued a specific warning to them during the campaign, telling them that working with a foreign power is illegal, and they must tell the FBI if they are contacted by Russia or any other foreign government.

The Trump campaign ignored that warning.

So, what’s Trump been saying? Here are his latest tweets – take a look, just remember, these are lies:

So, on that last tweet – Clapper did not say that. Trump read a bad headline from the right-leaning Real Clear Politics and repeated it, tossing quotes around it. Here’s what Clapper actually did say, on “The View.”

“With the informant business, well, the point here is the Russians,” Clapper said. “Not spying on the campaign but what are the Russians doing? And in a sense, unfortunately, what they were trying to do is protect our political system and protect the campaign.”

“They were spying on, a term I don’t particularly like, but on what the Russians were doing,” Clapper continued. “Trying to understand were the Russians infiltrating, trying to gain access, trying to gain leverage or influence which is what they do.”

“Well, why doesn’t like that? He should be happy,” Joy Behar asked.

“He should be,” Clapper responded.

Trump is gaslighting the American people. He’s lying, constantly. But those lies become facts in everyone’s mind – yours and mine included – unless we wholly discredit every word he utters, every tweet he posts. And that’s just too hard for most.

Which means, Trump wins.

Don’t let him.

Trump Brags Don Jr’s Book ‘Is Number One on NY Times Bestseller List’ – but His Campaign Bought the Book in Bulk: Report

Published

on

President Donald Trump has called The New York Times “fake news,” “biased,” “inaccurate,” and “a Fraud” with “Zero Credibility.”

But Wednesday night he was only too happy to cite the “failing” paper of record to brag that Donald Trump, Jr.’s new book, “Triggered,”  is at the top of the Times’ charts.

And while that may be true, there’s one large caveat that totally destroys the Trump family’s pride.

As this graphic shows, there’s a “dagger” next to Trump Jr.’s book: †.

As the Times notes, “bulk purchases appear with a dagger (†).”

That means there have been large “Institutional, special interest, group or bulk purchases” of the book, perhaps in this case by the RNC or other political entities, like the Trump campaign.

In fact, Popular Information and ThinkProgress founder Judd Legum last week reported the Trump campaign is “using campaign funds to bulk purchase his son’s book.”

Here’s the reported text of a Trump fundraising email from the Twitter account Trump Fundraising Emails:

The email is signed by Donald Trump, Jr.

Here’s how some are responding:

Pence: China Is Trying to Kick Trump Out of the White House

Published

on

Vice President Mike Pence delivered a startling attack against China Thursday morning, claiming Beijing is trying to remove President Donald Trump.

“China wants a different American president,” Pence told attendees at a right wing think tank tied to the military, the Hudson Institute, according to prepared remarks received by NCRM. He accuses Beijing of working to “influence American public opinion.”

“The Chinese Communist Party is rewarding or coercing American businesses, movie studios, universities, think tanks, scholars, journalists, and local, state, and federal officials,” Pence charges.

“Worst of all, China has initiated an unprecedented effort to influence American public opinion, the 2018 elections, and the environment leading into the 2020 presidential elections,” the Vice President warns, while ignoring the threat Russia poses.

The Vice President is trying to convince the American people that China, not Russia, is undermining American democracy.

“Beijing has mobilized covert actors, front groups, and propaganda outlets to shift Americans’ perception of Chinese policies,” Pence continues. “As a senior career member of our intelligence community recently told me, what the Russians are doing pales in comparison to what China is doing across this country.”

Politico notes that President Trump made a similar charge last week.

“Regrettably, we found that China has been attempting to interfere in our upcoming 2018 election,” Trump said. “They do not want me, or us, to win because I am the first president ever to challenge China on trade.”

The Washington Post’s David Nakamura offers insight into the Trump administration’s hypocrisy and possibly its motivation.

‘Goddamnit’: Listen as Trump Feigns Total Surprise When Omarosa Says Kelly Is Firing Her

Published

on

The man who came to international fame for saying, “You’re fired!” hasn’t been able to accomplish that task as the most powerful person in the world.

Monday morning NBC News aired audio provided by Omarosa Manigault-Newman of a telephone call between her and President Donald Trump, the day after White House Chief of Staff John Kelly fired her in 2017.

“Omarosa? Omarosa what’s going on? I just saw on the news that you’re thinking about leaving? What happened?” Trump says in the recording.

“General Kelly—General Kelly came to me and said that you guys wanted me to leave,” Omarosa replies.

“No…I, I, Nobody even told me about it,” Trump claims.

“Wow,” Omarosa, aware she is recording the conversation, says.

“You know they run a big operation, but I didn’t know it,” Trump continues, claiming he was unaware of her firing. “I didn’t know that. Goddamn it. I don’t love you leaving at all.”

Newman seems to have accepted Trump’s claim that he was unaware of her firing, ignoring the fact that he could just tell Kelly to rescind the decision.

“He doesn’t even know what’s happening in his White House,” Newman told NBC News. “He’s being puppeted.”
