President Cites Hate Group to Support His Claim
Despite promising voters thousands of times that Mexico will pay for his Southern border wall President Donald Trump after the election slowly moved to claiming Mexico indirectly would pay for his wall, possibly via tariffs - which never came. He then claimed other financial opportunities would ensure that ultimately, Mexico would pay for the wall.
This days are long gone, as Trump repeatedly has tried to get Congress to foot the bill.
But now Trump has yet another angle.
President Trump, enroute to California for his first visit since winning the election, will review prototypes of the border wall. He tweeted late Tuesday morning that the wall will pay for itself.
"According to the Center for Immigration Studies, the $18 billion wall will pay for itself by curbing the importation of crime, drugs and illegal immigrants who tend to go on the federal dole..." https://t.co/NdLC6jZwWE— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 13, 2018
The president was assisted by a report from Fox News, and cited the Center for Immigration Studies. The Southern Poverty Law Center lists the Center for Immigration Studies as a hate group.
Of course, Trump is wholly unaware of fact.
The Fox News article is titled, "Study: Trump's Border Wall Could Pay for Itself by Cutting Welfare to Illegal Immigrants."
It's going to be tough to come up with $18 billion since, according to CNN, "Undocumented immigrants do not qualify for welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, and most other public benefits. Most of these programs require proof of legal immigration status and under the 1996 welfare law, even legal immigrants cannot receive these benefits until they have been in the United States for more than five years."
