Americans Freak Out Over Trump Claiming Republicans ‘Hold the Supreme Court’
President Donald Trump in a pre-dawn Wednesday morning rant screamed in all-caps, “THE SECOND AMENDMENT WILL NEVER BE REPEALED!” He was referring to retire Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens’ New York Times op-ed calling for a repeal of the Second Amendment.
“As much as Democrats would like to see this happen, and despite the words yesterday of former Supreme Court Justice Stevens, NO WAY. We need more Republicans in 2018 and must ALWAYS hold the Supreme Court!”
That last part drew chills and outrage among Americans.
If there is one place in the nation that should be nonpartisan, it is the U.S. Supreme Court. And while justices are known to be liberal or conservative, and are appointed by Democratic or Republican presidents, and may, like Justice Stevens, be life-long Republicans, partisan politics have no place inside those hallowed halls.
Many expressed anger, concern, and outrage.

“Hold the Supreme Court” may be the most disturbing words I’ve heard this man utter since taking office. In a real democracy, no one should have the goal of “holding” what is to be a fair, just, objective, and independent entity.

um. “…hold the Supreme Court?” That’s not a Thing. I’m really not up for this today.

Whilst I’m not really surprised, the sheer lack of entertaining the separation powers is worrisome: “We need more Republicans in 2018 and must ALWAYS hold the Supreme Court!” https://t.co/PotTFRsIZy

When a president thinks that Republicans “hold the Supreme Court” it is a reminder that he fundamentally misunderstands how our govt works. #novemberiscoming #Impeach45

1. Justice Stevens is a Republican
2. Parties don’t “hold” the Supreme Court
3. Using all caps when talking about guns is just fueling our fear that people like you aren’t emotionally stable enough to own guns. pic.twitter.com/AHkeWnY3sh— OhNoSheTwitnt (@OhNoSheTwitnt) March 28, 2018
Political parties do NOT “hold” the Supreme Court nor do they control the Supreme Court justices decisions @realDonaldTrump! This is one of the dumbest things you’ve ever tweeted! https://t.co/KRiAA8g14J

“…must always hold the Supreme Court!”. Wow. And I thought the Supreme Court was in place to NOT be swayed by political partisanship, but to uphold the Constitution.

If Obama ever said “we must always hold the Supreme Court” there would have been articles of impeachment before the end of the week. https://t.co/dIyL9PcvV7

Wait… “HOLD the Supreme Court.” What the fuck!?’ You ignorant, vile, wannabe despot. The Supreme Court (as all courts) must NEVER be “HELD.” They’re supposed to be impartial for a reason. You fuckface.

“we must ALWAYS hold the Supreme Court!” sounds like authoritarianism…

How does one “hold” the Supreme Court? Are you saying you appointed Gorsuch because he was partisan?
— Betterin17 (@Betterin17) March 28, 2018
Once again I cannot understand your gibberish. Hold the Supreme Court? You can’t simply appoint judges that will cater to your wishes. That is fascism and you are indeed a fascist. You are going to be the first POTUS in history to actually go to prison. At this point it’s a given

And there it is in a nutshell.
The President thinks that Republicans or Democrats “hold” the Supreme Court.
It would be sad if it wasn’t so scary. https://t.co/NJQtD8225X

“Hold the supreme court” suggests a perverted view of the structure of our government. The court does not belong to you.
