Trump Calls Government Shutdown a ‘Nice Present’ from Democrats
Says Democrats Could Have ‘Easily Made a Deal’
On his anniversary of being sworn into office, with the government officially shut down, the president began his morning on Twitter with an attack on Democrats.
“Democrats are far more concerned with Illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our dangerous Southern Border,†Donald Trump asserted. “They could have easily made a deal but decided to play Shutdown politics instead. #WeNeedMoreRepublicansIn18 in order to power through mess!â€

“This is the One Year Anniversary of my Presidency and the Democrats wanted to give me a nice present,†he continued, adding the hashtag “#DemocratShutdown.â€

“For those asking, the Republicans only have 51 votes in the Senate, and they need 60,†Trump wrote. “That is why we need to win more Republicans in 2018 Election! We can then be even tougher on Crime (and Border), and even better to our Military & Veterans!â€

Then the president tweeted “#AMERICA FIRST!â€

Finally, for now, Trump asserted that “Democrats are holding our Military hostage over their desire to have unchecked illegal immigration. Can’t let that happen!â€

The Republican Senate majority, 51-49, isn’t enough to pass most legislation on a party-line vote. As The Hill reported, “the Senate vote for the Trump-backed continuing resolution, which would have kept the government running for another four weeks, was not a party-line vote. Five Democrats voted for the bill, while four GOP senators voted against it.
What’s more:
Earlier today, Republicans used the military as a prop to attack the Democrats. Moments ago, the GOP @SenateMajLdr blocked a bill on the Senate floor that would have ensured that military personnel are paid during the #TrumpShutdown. pic.twitter.com/Z5PVGDpCeD

Last night Democrats were all willing to do a VERY short term CR (1-3) days with no additional demands or conditions – just to keep the United States government and the negotiations open. We tried to do that with a Unanimous Consent Request and it was blocked.

Donald Trump ran for President as the great “negotiator.†Well, he negotiated his way into a completely unnecessary shutdown on the one year anniversary of his inauguration.
Time to make a deal to protect Dreamers and CHIP, Mr. President.

Uh, @realDonaldTrump, I don’t know if you’ve noticed but your party controls both houses in Congress and the White House and you have been unable to do your job and govern to keep the government open. Stop using racist memes to deny that. https://t.co/PrYWOL7UfI

Also, from the president himself (albeit in 2013):
Leadership: Whatever happens, you’re responsible. If it doesn’t happen, you’re responsible.
