Vast Majority of Alabama GOP Voters Say Allegations Against Roy Moore Are False and Media, Democrats Are Behind Them
White Evangelicals Most Likely to Support Moore
A just-released CBS News poll shows a resurgent Roy Moore, with Republican voters ignoring nine brave women who came forward to tell their stories of alleged child molestation, sexual assault, and pursuit of teenaged girls while the Republican candidate for Alabama’s open Senate seat was in his 30’s.
The poll shows seven out of 10 Republicans (71%) think the allegations against Moore are false. About nine of of ten Republicans who do not believe the allegations also think the media, Democrats, or people seeking attention or money are behind the allegations.
Among all likely voters, nearly two out of ten (18%) think the allegations, whether true or false, are not serious. Just over half (52%) think there are things more serious to consider than the allegations, and another 21% say the allegations do not concern them at all. Among white evangelicals, those who say the allegations do not concern them jumps to 30%.
Overall, the poll shows Roy Moore beating Democrat Doug Jones, 49% to 43% among likely voters. Among white evangelicals, that number jumps to 77% for Moore, just 13% for Jones.
The poll also finds 58% of all Alabama voters think abortion should be illegal. 56% think same-sex marriage should be illegal.Â
1,067 registered voters in Alabama were polled between November 28–December 1, 2017.
