Trump Prohibits CDC from Using ‘Transgender,’ ‘Diversity’ and ‘Science-Based’ in Official Documents

Seven Words Prohibited in Total

The Washington Post reported late Friday that the Trump administration is prohibiting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from using words including “transgender” and “science-based” in any official documents being prepared for next year’s budget.

As the outlet reported:

Policy analysts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta were told of the list of forbidden words at a meeting Thursday with senior CDC officials who oversee the budget, according to an analyst who took part in the 90-minute briefing. The forbidden words are “vulnerable,” “entitlement,” “diversity,” “transgender,” “fetus,” “evidence-based” and “science-based.”

The Post further reported that in some cases, analysts for the nation’s top public health agency were provided with “alternative phrases” for use. “Instead of ‘science-based’ or ‘evidence-based,’” they noted, “the suggested phrases is ‘CDC bases its recommendations on science in consideration with community standards and wishes.’”

Twitter was quick to criticize the reports and share their concerns:

The Post reported further that it was likely that other parts of Health and Human Services “are operating under the same guidelines regarding the use of these words.”
