Roy Moore’s Racist ‘Reds and Yellows’ Remark Overshadowed His Insane Claim US Hasn’t Been Great Since Slavery. Until Now.
‘Our Families Were Strong, Our Country Had a Direction’ Under Slavery, Moore Said
The Internet exploded Thursday night after a former Homeland Security attorney posted a tweet alerting America to a comment Roy Moore made, in which he said the last time America was great was during slavery. Moore made the insane remark during the same September speech in which he referred to Native Americans and Asians as “reds and yellows,“ – which he defended by falsely claiming it came from the Bible. That racist remark took the media’s focus.
Until now.
This tweet alerted social media users to Moore’s outrageous remarks:
Can’t make this up — Roy Moore said in September that the last time America was great was when we had slavery. (h/t @reckonalabama)https://t.co/NMF4BCQ6ZS pic.twitter.com/XbpPtdifuS

Here’s how the LA Times, back in September, reported the story:
At Moore’s Florence rally, the former judge outlined all the wrongs he sees in Washington and “spiritual wickedness in high places.†He warned of “the awful calamity of abortion and sodomy and perverse behavior and murders and shootings and road rage†as “a punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins.â€
In response to a question from one of the only African Americans in the audience — who asked when Moore thought America was last “great†— Moore acknowledged the nation’s history of racial divisions, but said: “I think it was great at the time when families were united — even though we had slavery — they cared for one another…. Our families were strong, our country had a direction.â€
At the same event, Moore referred to Native Americans and Asian Americans as “reds and yellows,†and earlier this year he suggested the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks were divine punishment.
[Bolding ours]
And here’s how some on Twitter responded:Â
For suggesting life was better during segregation and Jim Crow, Trent Lott was run out of the Senate. Now Roy Moore is saying life was better under SLAVERY.

Like everyone should be super shocked that the same “man†who stalked and sexually assaulted girls, also thinks Jews and LGBTQ people are going to hell, and that the last time America was great was during slavery.
Roy Moore – like Donald Trump, the face of the Republican Party.— Amy Siskind (@Amy_Siskind) December 7, 2017
RED ALERT! I KID YOU NOT!!!
A Black man asked Roy Moore “When was the last time America was great?”
And Roy Moore said during slavery.
I’m dead serious. https://t.co/08ZtQYh7qi

Roy Moore:
•Molesting underage girls is no big deal
•Slavery wasn’t so bad
•Women, Muslims should be barred from voting
•Jews burn in hell
•America is evil
•Putin is rightLadies & Gentlemen, I give you the avatar of the modern GOP

I’ve been asking this question for a while now: when EXACTLY was this “great” America trump is tryna get back to. Roy Moore just ANSWERED it:
Slavery.
So the Alabama candidate, endorsed by trump, is OK with slavery and child-fucking.😠#GOPisEvilhttps://t.co/yEYrLqqeD6

A dangerous, insensitive, white supremacist statement from #RoyMoore. Rhetoric our nation and world cannot afford, particularly with our neighbors on the auction block in #Libya. https://t.co/ffPRp7XPdW

Just to be absolutely clear,
The Republican Party has formally endorsed a candidate for Senate who believes the country was better off during SLAVERY. pic.twitter.com/PH1yp7ZtKD

So Roy Moore:

doesn’t think women should hold office.
ditto Muslims
even worse about LGBT
and thinks there was no time better in America than the era of slavery b/c “families stayed together.”missing any lowlights?

Roy Moore: The last time America was great was when families were united even though we had slavery.
The Truth: The last time America was great was 2016 when Barack Obama was President and these White Supremacists were no where near our government.

Pundits: “Roy Moore couldn’t be any more repulsive if he tried!â€
Roy Moore: “Hold my beer.â€https://t.co/gyOIDB8o4P

I’m curious how families torn apart by slavery were “united” and “strong.” Of course, when Roy Moore says “we,” it is a reference to white people, not Americans. After below excerpt he went on to refer to Native Americans & Asian Americans as “reds” and “yellows.” So, yeah. https://t.co/Waa7Wui3Zi
