Yesterday He Refused to Resign
A Republican anti-choice U.S. Congressman, who on Wednesday announced he would not seek re-election but refused to resign after text messages revealed he had an extramarital affair and urged his mistress to get an abortion, will leave Congress. Rep.  Tim Murphy has resigned to Speaker Paul Ryan, effective October 21.

“This afternoon I received a letter of resignation from Congressman Tim Murphy, effective October 21,” Speaker Ryan said in a statement. “It was Dr. Murphy’s decision to move on to the next chapter of his life, and I support it. We thank him for his many years of tireless work on mental health issues here in Congress and his service to the country as a naval reserve officer.”
Pennsylvania’s governor will have to call a special election and cannot appoint someone to fill the seat temporarily.Â
The district is rated solid Republican. It’s possible but unlikely a Democrat could win the seat.

One Republican has already announced he will run for Murphy’s seat.
