Betsy DeVos Says Her ‘Heart Is With’ DREAMers, Internet Says Nope.
DeVos Tells DREAMers to Have ‘Courage’ – as if They Didn’t Already
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, fresh from extensive backlash after admitting she will be rescinding Obama-era Title IX guidelines helping protect victims of sexual assault (video), told CBS News her “heart is with” the DREAMers.
“Well, first of all my heart is with them,” Secretary DeVos said Thursday of undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. by their parents when they were children.Â
“I understand they’re here not by their own volition, and yet they are serious about pursuing their education and contributing to our American society and culture. And I would just encourage them to take courage and have courage,” she told CBS News’ Jan Crawford.Â
Of course, the 800,000 or so DREAMers had courage when they came out of the shadows, paid the federal government $495 every two years, and handed over personally identifying information, in order to get a work permit and protection from deportation under DACA. President Trump killed the program this week, with a six month delay.
“I know this is a very difficult issue, and I know it’s one with which the president has struggled, as well as all of us,” DeVos added. “We are a nation of compassion, and we are also a nation of laws.”
BuzzFeed News deputy editor Matt Berman on Wednesday noted DeVos’ office wouldn’t even respond to requests for a statement on DACA.Â

And after her claim, the Internet has decided it does not believe Secretary DeVos’ “heart is with” the DREAMers.

Dreamers can live w/o Devos’ “heart” and Trump’s “big love” – they need Congress’s protection. #DACA #Dreamers https://t.co/kK5gIJkBV4

Betsy DeVos’ heart goes out to dreamers, as long as they don’t want an education and are OK with being sexually assaulted at school.

I’m sick of all of this “the Dreamers are in my heart” talk. If DeVos was serious she would have challenged Jeff Sessions before Tuesday. https://t.co/dGFyKS98Oc
