In Rare Statement Both Former Presidents Bush Denounce Racial Bigotry, an Apparent Criticism of Trump
Exceptionally Rare for Former Presidents to Speak Out
President George H. W. Bush and President George W. Bush have just released a joint statement condemning racial bigotry and hatred, in an apparent attempt to protect the nation and their party from the stain the current president has embedded over the past few days.Â
WHY IT MATTERS: There is an unspoken, unwritten rule that once they leave office, presidents generally don’t weigh in on current events or criticize the current sitting president, unless absolutely necessary. If they are of the same party, it is exceptionally rare for them to speak out.
“America must always reject racial bigotry, anti-Semitism, and hatred in all forms,” the statement, issued Wednesday morning, reads. “As we pray for Charlottesville, we are reminded of the fundamental truths recorded by that city’s most prominent citizen in the Declaration of Independence: we are all created equal and endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights. We know these truths to be everlasting because we have seen the decency and greatness of this country.”
This is a clear acknowledgment by the two past Republican presidents that the current occupant of the White House has threatened the very core beliefs of this nation.
This is a stunning moment.
